Hey guys. I just bought a new desktop PC and when I hook my ethernet cable into it, the internet connection is EXTREMELY slow, like 0.10 mbps slow. It's gotten to the point that the ETA for downloading Google Chrome is 3 hours. I've also noticed that it sort of eats up so much bandwidth that even my other devices' internet connections get slowed down a lot too. The speed goes back to normal whenever I disable the network device on my pc.

I've tried buying a new ethernet cable, didn't work. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling my network adapter's driver, didn't work. I've manually inputted the DNS servers and I've restarted my pc so many times now as well, and to no avail. I don't know what to do. Hope someone can help.

*Also, don't know if this is important, but the LAN light on my modem blinks an awful lot, and very rapidly. I don't remember that happening with my previous PC.

**Another note, I thought maybe my modem was the culprit and that maybe it was having problems with wired connection. So I disabled my PC's network and hooked an ethernet cable into my laptop to test my theory, but the speed was totally normal. When I re-enabled my PC's network, the speed dropped drastically once more.

Thanks a bunch!

If its a new PC, maybe windows is just downloading many many updates. That happened to me too. Also (rarerly) the updates wont download anymore, but still pull bandwidth. Check your Update section in settings.

Thanks for answering. How long did that last for you before your internet got better?

That depends on how many updates windows is goind to download. Just go to settings and check if its downloading.

Alright so windows was downloading updates, so I let it finish them all. Now it says my device is up to date. There has been an improvement in the speed, but it's still not quite normal. It seems to still be pulling bandwidth, just as you suggested. What should I do? I already disabled automatic updates.

It is important to perform the steps that were outlined earlier in this thread in THE EXACT ORDER.

1. Unplug the router/modem for 2 minutes then reboot it.
2. Restart your computer and let it reboot.

After that then run the speed test and report back. http://www.speedtest.net/

How does this compare to your advertised speed in your area?

Yes, thanks for the reply. I've done everything you've suggested. :) Anyway, it really was just the updates hogging all the bandwidth, and now my internet is fine after letting Windows finish downloading. :)
