Hi everybody,

I have recently left College and I am currently on the job search. However, I am in a difficult position because I do not know what it is I want to do. I haven't found a passion or "calling in life" so to say. The reason I'm writing to you now, is that I would like any opinions or suggestions on what you feel could advise me.

I'm 20 years old and I live in the UK. I've been to College to do Forensic science then Performing Arts (Seems logical) I got C's mostly in my GCSE's. Whilst I do not know what it is I want to do, I have always been interesting around computers and I feel that is where most of my skills are based.

A couple of months ago I decided to start building my own gaming PC, which I found to be an incredibly fun task. Normally I tend to get bored and frustrated when reading up about topics for no purpose, but as I was working on a project, suddenly the research became fascinating to me. I'm still a beginner, but I'm spending most of my time learning about PC's, components, even a bit of coding.

One of the main problems is every companies love of degrees. I really do not want to go to University. When I want to or need to learn something I prefer going online and doing my own research. It feels a waste of time and money to spend 3 years and £27,000 at Uni. Especially when I do not feel I would be able to concentrate and do what is required of me as my mind tends to wander.

I feel I have the potential to do excellent in a field I'm placed in, yet there is nothing which I've been truly passionate about that I have always wanted to pursue, so I do not know what is out there. A lot of apprenticeships and jobs I search for without a degree are mostly Admin. I consider myself to me ambitious, so I don't want to spend years of my life doing spreadsheets because I'm worried I will be stuck in a loop and not being able to leave due to finances and comfort.

I've heard all the cliche speeches from family members and teachers of "You need to go to Uni, then get a job doing something you probably don't like to get through in life" "90% of people don't do what they like" etc. Whilst that may be true, I wanted to hear from the communities perspective for variety.

I've always spend smaller amounts of time doing a variety of things rather than a long time on one topic. Some projects I do may include:
*Learning C programming (Very basic)
*Video editing in Sony Vegas Pro
*Learning how PC components work for building gaming rigs
*Web design

So my question is. Do you guys have any opinions or experiences that you could please offer to me in this situation? Where you may have also been undecided on what you wanted. Or possible career pathways. Online courses etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading.

If it'S really a passion and you're good at it you possibly can start your OWN shop, online and physically with computers, accessoires etc.... It Will probably be a harsh start but the market for custombuild pc'S and al that is growing. Although it depends on the around of physical shops near you.

I'd love to learn more about building PC's. If only I had a job so I could afford new components to try out.

You can try to find some work at a local computer store. Or go work at a supermarket akthough they don't pay you a lot. I really can't give any more advice because I am planning to go to University but I tried giving everything I had in mind. Also I don't live in England so I don't know how easy/hard it is to find a proper job . 🙁

Thank you for the advice.
In the meantime, I'l try and see if there are any vacancies at PC World.
