Help for School

Hello! I'm working on a school project and am very computer illiterate! The assignment is to upgrade an existing computer (used for WP, email, & gaming) - graphics card and RAM.
I'm currently using a laptop & from what I have read it's only compatible with an external graphics card.
Could you recommend a "fake" PC I could use to upgrade both graphics and RAM?

Depending on the laptop you could upgrade the internal graphics card.
I upgraded a Cleveo laptop from a GTX 850m to a GTX 880m
The same can be done to a Dell Alienware 17 laptop (M17x)
