Note: PC is almost 1 year old.

My PC runs fine when it's on, but every once in awhile I will put it to sleep or shut it down. When I go to push the button when it's shut down, I sometimes have to push it quite a few times to get it to turn on. Once on - it's fine.

But 2/3 of the time I put it to SLEEP, I will have to hit that power button dozens and dozens of times to get it on, and my system won't let me wake the computer with mouse/keyboard so that is out of the question. I suppose I will just stop putting it to sleep as one day I'm going to break the button trying to get it on.

Anyone have any idea why it's like this? I'm dreading the day it just won't turn on anymore - pretty sure it's just the power switch. But because it is SO inconsistent that it does this, I'm just really confused and don't know what to do.

Thanks for help.

What you describe sounds a lot like a poor connection to or in the front panel On / Off button. It is a simple momentary-contact switch (the same as a common doorbell pushbutton) that closes the contacts when you push it, and opens them again immediately when you stop pushing. The insides of that switch could be dirty so that a push does not close the contacts. But there's also another possible bad connection. There is a pair of wires from that button to a connector that plugs into a header at the bottom front of your mobo. The header is called Front Panel or something similar, and likely it will have several wire sets with separate connectors on their ends plugged into different pins. Look there for the connector with 2 wires labelled...

Look there for the connector with 2 wires labelled "PWR" or similar. Unplug that, then plug it back in. Do that several times. Be sure you do not disconnect any other items by mistake. IF the problem is a loose or dirty connection at those pins, this will "scrub" any oxidation or dirt from them and solve the problem. See if that does fix it.
