Hello

So,a month ago I bought a new processor - Intel Core i7 7700 3.6GHz
I did monitor the temperature when playing games, and was around 60-65°C
But 5 days ago I bought Far Cry 5. From the start everything was fine, after I got into the game,I started hearing a weird beep while playing it. It was random beep. I though it was part of the game. After that I noticed it comes from inside the computer. The beep starts randomly while playing FC5 and last a second (max 2 seconds) then stops, starts again after few minutes and so on. I checked my GPU temperature, while inside the game it was 60°C
But with my CPU it was different this time.
I uploaded an image of core temp - https://ibb.co/cjfcPx

Thats the temperature of my CPU while playing the game.
I wonder is this normal or not? Is the beep really from the CPU? It's brand new 1 month old. If it is indeed from my CPU,perhaps I should buy a new cooler ? (the current one is the one that comes with the processor) or maybe get a better thermal paste? it was pre-applied.

Please help. This beep happens only when playing Far Cry 5
I do play other games (like just cause 3,outlast 2,far cry primal) but there isn't such a beep.

And sorry for my bad english. :)

Solution

it's because of the data load on the cpu, Far cry 5 is a huge game with an advanced AI that predicts and counter acts your moves and at the same time it keeps all the animals and people alive and realistic.
so it is with all games, it's data more data more data that needs to be processed by your CPU. the more data the more work the cpu has to do and process, and with the more work the more power it draws, and there you have it 125 watts of power converted into heat.
it really doesn't matter on with cpu core the temp is read from that's because it is the same surface the the heat is...

First off, your English i really really good,

now, the cpu is not supposed to be 91c (celsius) as you can see Tj max temp (max temp for the cpu) is 100c (Celsius).
You need to stop playing that game immediately!... if you continue with that you'll burn your new cpu of.
it's a sign that your cpu is not cooled enough down, that the cooler can't keep up. Either you haven't got the right amount of cooling paste between the cooler block and the cpu or you cooler is inadequate.

will you please list up your system specs so that we can properly help you?
you can use Speccy to list up the most important stuff which is Cpu, Ram, GPU, Mobo, PSU, and remember to specify what cooler there is mounted on your cpu.
you can download speccy from here: https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/download

Cheers ! 😀

About the cooler I really don't know how to check what type it is.. it's the stock that came with the processor.

i can tell you now that you cannot continue to game with the stock cooler that came with the cpu.
It just doesn't cut it !
you'll burn the cpu of if you continue with that.

you need to go out and by an aftermarket cooler:

  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
    or
    Noctua NH-D15 cpu cooler
    or a water cooling system
Corsair Hydro H100i V2 High Performance
if you can't mount the cooler on your cpu, you'll have to get an pc repair expert to do it for you.
it is definitely not something you wanna be tampering with your self if you ain't got the tools or the experience.
i'm sorry but this is the only way to go if you want to continue game those big games.

good luck, cheers ! 😀

Solution

Well then it's settled,I'm getting a new cooler 😀
I think I'll get this one - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
I have some experience in mounting a cooler, but can you first tell me what kind of thermal paste should I get with it? A good one

good idea. but be careful that you don't do it to hastily, take your time do it right, and the most important part use the right tools, Do not over tighten the screws that will damage and ruin you cooler brackets.

you don't need buy extra cooler paste there is cooler paste within the package when you buy a new one.
here's a guide on how to install it:

Cheers! 😀

Thanks 😀

One last question, how can I clear the current thermal paste applied to the CPU? Can I just use a normal napkin or a towel?

Also I found in one website that the size of the cooler is - 159 x 120 x 80 mm And in the video you included it's really huge I'm not sure If I can put it in my pc case - http://www.altech.bg/en/product/43191 thats my pc case

yes you can use a napkin, BUT its preferred to use something that anti static, some cloth's are microfiber and anti static.
Use some (very little) Isopropyl alcohol on the napkin (should be very soft paper or cloth). the Isopropyl Alcohol is a solvent that dissolves oil and other chemicals like the thermal compound.
a guide how to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9MJUuU58vE

Nah I dont want to buy an isopropyl alcohol just for that,I hope a napkin can do the job

Well thanks anyway for the help :)

If you don't have the alcohol mentioned, take a soft anti static cloth, and clean the old paste off as best you can.

When you apply the new paste, just use a dot. Like maybe the size of a grain of rice. Do not use to much paste. If you use too much paste, you'll actually have the effect of creating insulation on your chip and actually might see temperatures increase.

Personally I like to use my finger to spread it evenly over the surface of the CPU. Once you do that, carefully mount the cooler. The 212 Evo if I remember, has a second fan bracket so you can mount another 120mm fan for a push/pull type setup.

Also, make sure you have enough exhaust fans going out of the case as well to help hot air get out of your case.

Thank you :)
So when I apply the new paste I should just use a dot? Because in the video above the guy spread it at the CPU,and I've seen around the internet an X shape is the best.

Also I found in some websites that people use clean ethyl alcohol to remove old thermal paste. I do have of this alcohol and I wonder can I use it?

Hyper 212 evo it is not recommended for that cpu, get something stronger. I really think it woul be better a 120mm-140mm-240mm liquid cooling to be absolutely sure. (corsair h 80 v2, NZXT kraken x42, corsair h100i v2) or any strong air colling. 212 evo is at the bottom of decent cooler so i dont really know if it will handle a kabylake, a sandy bridge yes, but a kabylake dont know. They differ in heat output, sandy bridge get hot slower but kaby lake gets really hot really fast and 212 evo cant handle that. I have a friend of mine as example, he has a 8700k but he doesnt overclock, witha 212 evo the cpu gets 90 degrees as soon as puts some load on it. The cooler is mine, i had previously on an ivy bridge (3570k) which could handle very well that cpu. In both instances the cpu cooler was mounted by me so i know for sure it was mounted correctly, used artic mx-4 tim so it is a top end paste. The difference is that cofeelake heats very fast and the cooler cant transfer so much heat so fast.

I've already ordered the Hyper 212 evo

Is it very loud?

Was doing some quick reading, surprising because people say it will barely handle a 7700k at stock. Not having worked with that CPU, in not sure. You could probably return it for a different cooler. It should also come with a spare bracket so you can get another 120mm fan and have one fan pushing air through the cooler and another fan pulling air toward the back exhaust fan.

As far as loud, it's a little loud, but I would say liveable. I usually wear headphones if I'm playing a game anyway though lol.

i'm an AMD guy to. And you are absolutely right about the temperature. no processor is designed to run with that amount of heat. It really doesn't get you any headroom and it wears down the cpu so it definitely shortens its life span rather quick with continuous running 90C (celsius) or above.

It is far from normal, and it is wearing to much on the CPU and shortens its life span. Yes the guy is lying.

Today my new cooler ( Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo ) arrived. It was indeed very hard to mount, but I managed it :) with the help of a friend. Played Far Cry 5 for straight 4 hours and the max temperature the CPU reached was 60c,which is amazing. At times even below 60. Also the cooler is very silent,I can't hear it at all. At first I though it didn't worked 😀 because I couldn't hear it LOL. Anyway so far the new cooler does great job. Thanks to theo.esk for the quick responds and help.and again I have a very good opinion on Tomshardware.

Thanks again.

Good deal. Sounds like you may have room for a mild overclock then. I never had problems with those coolers even on AMD FX CPUs which were known to run hot at times. Glad it's happy! Just be sure you're plugged into the CPU fan port on your board and have the alert set up to ding again if the temp ever gets too hot, on the off chance the fan would ever start failing then you'll know.

Also, get some compressed air and make sure to air dust the cooler and other fans etc in your case every 3-6 months or so to keep things running nice and cool.
