Help installing windows updates...

So, there are three updates that can't be installed, whenever I try to install them, my computer freezes at Preparing to configure Windows, do not turn of your computer. It can't get past that point. Then I get into safe mode and it says Failed to configure Windows, rolling back changes or something like that. What can I do to install those updates?

The updates are:
1) Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2862330)
2) Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2913602)
3) Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2913431)

I found a quick little guide, follow these steps and let me know if it works.

1. Hold down the power button and switch of your machine
2. Restart your computer and just before windows boots hit the F8 button
3. Boot into safe mode
4. login (if nessecary)
5. Make sure that any virus scanners at this point are disabled before continuing
6. Click "Start" > "Accessories" > "System Restore"
7. Click "Next"
8. Pick an earlier restore point and then click next, (its best to pick the 1 just before you had problems)
9. Click next and follow the prompts and it will start a system restore
10. wait till your computer does this System Restore process
11. Regardless of whether the system restore process fails or passes it should now get you out being stuck at "Preparing To Configure Windows. Please Do Not Turn Off Your Computer."
Now...
12. login if required
13 Disable Virus Scanner before moving on
14. Run windows update
15. now it should run without any problems

I also tried some hotfixes from Microsoft, they report no problems... Did I mention that sometimes on boot up my pc completely freezes just after a log on, then I have to restart it once or twice to boot normaly...

I got back from an overseas trip in March. Every time I tried to run Windows Update in "batch" mode - doing them all at once, my Dell XPS 420 Win 7 x64 not only hung on reboot at "configuring Windows 32%" - it crashed with the blue screen of death. Two cycles through safe mode boot up/regular boot up (reversing the updates) and one more BSOD later, I was back where I started. After days of experimenting (thanks Microsoft, I had nothing better to do) I figured out it was KB2862330 that was the problem. I hid it and ran all the other updates. First one at a time, then all at once. They worked. I'm glad that worked because I was about to despair and do a clean install of W7 x64 ultimate - which would have wasted another bunch of hours, for sure.

When I was trying KB2862330 and failing, I had NO usb devices plugged in (noted that someone else here thought that was the problem).

Then I searched forums for comments on KB2862330 and found that it first came out last fall and crashed a bunch of computers. Then it was "fixed" and reissued in mid January 2014. Well, it may not kill all Win 7 x64 systems, but it sure won't work on mine. So I'm leaving it hidden. I'll read what it was supposed to fix (apparently an insecurity in usb ports) and try to protect my computer another way.

So my solution - wait until Microsoft fixes it for real - and then be sure to try it all by itself.
