Hello everybody, I recently wanted to pick up a new project to do on my free time and upgrade my old computer! Sadly I'm having trouble finding a good graphics card for gaming on my old computer. I was wondering if you good men, and women could help me pick one!

Here are the specs: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01859864&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=4006020

and my computer actually has 8GB of RAM instead of the 6GB it says their due to me putting in another 2GB stick.

I'm also aware that I may have to upgrade my power supply if it can not handle the new card. If thats the case if you could let me know what I need (Possibly a link) that would be great!

Price isn't really an issue, so shoot away!

Thanks again!

Number one piece of information we need is monitor resolution, which I didn't see listed with the HP website.

If you want to just upgrade the graphics, I recommend the HD 5670. This card runs about $80 and you can play modern games at decent resolutions without fear of your power supply being inadequate.

A couple more things to keep in mind; The case looks like a micro ATX form factor, which means you'll be limited on the size of the graphics card you choose. Also since its from an OEM manufacturer the PSU could be non-standard or micro ATX size and you may be limited as to what power supply you can use as replacement.

Oh sorry I can't believe I totally forgot about that! well its a 23" Monitor running at 1920 x 1080. Hope that could help out!

I dunno why people keep suggesting the 5670, the 6670 is more powerful and consumes less power. Its also cooler.

I mean I totally understand if its a pricing thing, but if you're trying to get something to run on a bad power supply you want a card that consumes less power.

Seeing how I do have a 23" Full HD monitor. I'll diffidently check out that GTX 560. Any idea if im going to need to pick up a new power supply

For that we will need you to open your case and take a look at the sticker, report back here with the name/brand/watts and 12v rail amps

People are just throwing graphics cards at me left and right hah. Any ideas which I should get?

Yes, you'll need a 500W PSU for the GTX 560ti. It is a very nice card in the $250 range. Here's some PSUs to look at :

Antec : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371035

OCZ: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341016

PCP&C:, 5 year warranty: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703035

PSU is the first thing to upgrade. Doesnt have to cost an arm or a leg for a decent PSU. This one will do anything you want it to, except run a 6990 or gtx 590. Has 2 of the 6 pins and 2 of the 6+2(8pin) connectors. Very solid, best bang for buck.

It's future proof. Unless u want two mammoth video cards. I can vouche for this power supply, it has been rock solid. Just make sure you do wire management effectively, it's not modular, hence the price being so low.

Entry level (no high demand gaming) - Radeon 6750 or 6750. 100-115 dollars

Mid range (can play any game, but not highres/maxsetting) GTX 560 Superclock -180 dollars

upper mid range - 6950 - 240$

High end - will be the maximum for your CPU without significant bottlenecking, and maximum for the PSU i reccomended --- Radeon 6970 - 350$ I reccomend this over the 330$ gtx 570 simply because it has 2gb of ddr5 video ram instead of 1.3 gb. It can handle multiple screen gaming and higher resolutions better. Make sure fits in case.

I disagree, entry level is a 5670/6670, I can play any game on atleast medium/high at 1920 x 1080 with mine :)

if you consider ''any game'' to be counterstrike source, or tf2, or modern warfare 3, then yes.

actually i know from experience the 5670/6670 will not run tf2 or mw2 at 1080p with smooth playability. so no.

I don't personally have MW2 but I can run TF2 maxed when I did have it.

I can also run AvA,maxed Crysis on high, GTA IV on medium, saints row medium high (haven't tried any higher since I don't see a difference in quality), WoW on ultra (sans shadows/sunshafts and water on medium) skyrim on auto detected medium

Bench of MW2:

Bench of Crysis:

The settings on crysis were: Crysis
Patch 1.2.1, DirectX 9, 64-bit executable, benchmark tool
Low Quality, Medium Textures, Shadows, Physics, Shaders, Water, and Sound, No AA

A bit modest if you ask me...

Yeah, I recommend the HD 5670 because it is a very similar experience at $20 cheaper than the 6670. But you bring up a good point, cooler running and less power draw are nice.
