Help me spend 6k on Gaming PC

I typically max out Alienware and purchase. Wanting to get a little bit more bang for buck. Where should i go and what should i get.

SPEND MY MONEY!!!

Monitor will be seperate... what should i get?
I dont want to build it myself, too lazy.

Why not all SSDs, throw out the HDD when you have a 6k budget!!!

7990 x2!!!

I would go with a top of the line i7 Ivy Bridge over SB-E to be honest, saves a lot more money for other things (ie no HDDs lol)

Also I like samsung 830 ssds more than any ocz offerings. I had enough problems for vertex 3 and their sandforce stuff.

Why so much HD space? I currently have 512G that is about 3/4 full. How much is enough?

Is there a point in which having too much RAM or VIDEO makes it unuseable by todays games?

As for the 3 monitors, i'm just not sure if i could get use to see'ing the frame of the montor inbetween the screens.

Single monitor + 3 yr warrenty & I dont have to build it.

dyc4ha -- i went to OriginPC, and i like what i see. I understand that quite a few of the original Alienware folks moved over there once they were bought by Dell. For about the same money, i can get better graphics and memory.


jrgong -- i honestly dont want the hastle of trying to build this thing myself, such a pain. Your triple monitor/video card setup, does that mean 1 card per monitor or could i use the power of all 3 cards on 1 monitor?
-What do you think about NEC PA301W for a monitor choice?
-are you against Windows 8 for gaming?

Why not get the cheaper 3930k and raid 2 512GB SSD's? The OP said he barely uses all of his 512GB drive he already has. It's a waste of money to get the extreme edition, 3mb more of cache isn't noticable in most situations. $500 for pretty much 3mb more cache is ridiculous.

Downgrade the 3930X to a 3930K, its a tiny performance difference for $500 more.
Spend the extra into a proper custom water-cooling setup.
Could drop the sound card depending on your audio setup.

A $100 case on a $6k rig? Beef that up a bit, gotta make the thing look impressive.

EDIT: This is completely overkill for a gaming rig, it is literally impossible to spend this much cash on a gaming only rig and expect it to be justified. You could save a lot of money by going with a more sensible rig.

Think what the pixel density on that would be... And people say 1080p 27" screens are bad.

You can use three GPUs on a single screen, but it would be pointless. Overkill.

A 4K screen would probably be over your budget?...

Overkill to the point where the vast majority of your money is being wasted. Games will never benefit from having a 3930X over a 3570k, nor a TB of overpriced SSD capacity (Intel 520's arent even that fast, get a Vertex 4 or Samsug 830).

As I said above, you can get yourself a killer gaming rig for much less. You don't have to spend money because you have money.

Were I building this rig, I would go with
I7-3770k
Corsair H-100, or other high end watercooling
High end Z77 motherboard
32gb DDR-1866 RAM
2x or 3x AMD Radeon 7970
2x or 3x 2560x1660 monitors 27" (larger than that just means you'll have to sit further away - only go bigger if you want monitors for a wall & you sit on the couch).
4x 256GB SSD in RAID 1+0 (data backup + maximum possible speed)
Any decent case $200 or over
Large UPS/Battery backup

That won't be even close to 6k though. Spend the rest on a direct fiber internet line to your house, or something - will provide more gaming advantage than improving your PC any further.

Thanks for the heads up on the SSD, will research the samsun 830's.

I hear ya on the overkill part, but i'm hoping that by building a better than needed PC today, it will stay relivant for the next few years.

As far as going with a botique or someone like mwave, i'll definatly look into them.

The 3960X is still a WASTE OF MONEY. Get the 3930k instead. There is almost no difference. Getting the 3960X means you're more than willing to throw money away and receive no benefit. Even the 3770k is overkill for most people.

Why not buy what you use and not what you don't?

In my opinion, a $2000 computer is plenty for 5 years, before it gets outdated and won't max out GTA 7.

Future proofing is honestly just an excuse to spend a lot of money on something that's going to be outdated in 2 years (by futureproofing standards).

A reasonable build:
i7-3770k
Corsair H100
16GB 1600MHz RAM
1 GTX 690
Corsair 750W or better
High end Z77 board
any case
120GB or 256GB SSD
1TB HDD

It's cheaper and smarter to upgrade every few years than dump $6000 on a system that's doomed to perform as well as a $1500 system in 2-4 years.
