Hello,

Hello,

I just upgraded my CPU and motherboard and I just completed a fresh installation of Windows 10. I would like to get as much juice as I can get from my CPU and since I got I5-8600k I would like to overclock it.

My specs: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VrkhRG

With that said I have never overlock anything in my life but my GPU, which is easy, right.

Can anybody help me understand how to overclock that CPU with that motherboard?

What things should I avoid? Is OCing a difficult thing to do?

Thanks for the read.

I overclocked my i5 8600k to a modest all-core 4.5ghz on a cheap Cooler Master Hyper 103 cooler and I get temps that PEAK at 63c during Aida64 stress testing and at between 50-60c during intensive gaming.

Either way, if you aren't comfortable with adjusting overclock settings yourself, you could take the easy and safe route of letting your motherboard do all the work (although it will be a very modest overclock). If I'm not mistaken, that MSI motherboard uses Click Bios 5 and if you enter the BIOS you can simply click on the big "Game Boost" button in the top left corner and that will apply a safe, modest and manufacturer tested overclocking profile to your CPU. I think the OC I get from my motherboard's automatic overclocking profile...
That cooler is not enough to get any decent overclock. These run hot. you would be better off getting something like this. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608041

I have my i5 8600k overclocked to 5.0ghz on my Corsair H100i v2.0, and I am actually thinking about dialing it back a bit, since sometimes while gaming I will go above 75c.

I am sorry to say that cooler you have is very weak. Overclocking with it is not a good idea.

I would have to agree with urbancamper. the CPU cooler that you have chosen will be very weak for overclocking. In very basic terms you should be able to at least test quickly by going into the BIOS and changing the CPU multipler to 47 for an all core 4.7GHZ without changing anything else..Leave everything in auto...It should boot no problems as it did on mine...Then test with Prime95 version 26.6 and RealBench to see how high your temps get...if it goes above 80..I would stop test and buy new CPU cooler. Be aware that I am running a tripple fan AIO though. After that you can start tweaking vcore down...

I think the OC I get from my motherboard's automatic overclocking profile is 4.3ghz on all cores so it's not as good as manually overclocking but it's as easy as pressing a button.
