HELP! My computer can't connect to the internet, but the rest of my network is fine

I've got a big problem and am desperate for a solution. My computer went offline today and I can't seem to get it back on, no matter what I try. The odd thing is, everything else in my network seems to be ok.

Here's the network setup:

Cable -> Modem (Comcast Xfinity Ubee, can't find the model number) -> Router (Netgear WNDR4500) -> 24 port Switch (trendnet) -> computers

Earlier today I restarted my computer and when it came back on, I had no internet. This sometimes happens when I have my Nvidia Shield plugged in though ethernet, so I unplugged the Shield, reset the network, and came back. My computer still isn't able to connect to the internet. But everything else on the network has no problems, both wired and wireless.

The very odd part is that I seem to have some internet. Just nothing usable. I have a network monitor widget that says I'm online. It gives me my internal and external IP address and it looks normal. It even shows outgoing and incoming activity. My windows Network and Sharing Center shows me as online. And even Windows Update seems to have an internet connection (along with the device manager "search for drivers" function). But when I open any webpage in Chrome or Opera, it tells me I have no internet connection. My Adobe CC, Origin, Google Drive, and all other web services say I have no internet. Steam won't even open.

I can ping an outside connection, such as google, yahoo or 8.8.8.8, and I can ping my router. But browsers and other programs have no connection. Chrome says "no internet connection" when I try to go to an external site, but it says "not available" when I try to plug in my routers IP address.

Ive tried the following with no change:
-Switching my IP from static to dynamic
-Releasing/renewing my IP from ipconfig
-uninstalling/reinstalling my NIC
-Plugging in my computer directly to the router
-plugging in my computer directly to the modem
-using a Pluggable USB to ethernet adapter

I work from home so every hour I don't have internet is money lost. I need to get back online ASAP. I would run out and buy another NIC adapter but if the USB one isn't working I have no reason to think that another NIC would solve it. My current NIC is on my motherboard, a Gigabyte z77x-udh3. When I plug in an ethernet cable to that NIC the lights come on, but they're both orange. I'm not sure if thats normal for that mobo, I've never really paid attention.

Any help at all? Like I said, I'm desperate!
Thanks

Solution

try unplugging your modem/router for 30 seconds...this happens to me alot usually fixes it...though i dont use ipv6 on my comp i use ipv4,
this post is for your original issue of being about to ping but not actually connect
next time you have a connection issue similar to your original issue do this step first before anything else to ensure you arent overworking yourself tryin to fix a 30 second fix...

Try going to:

Control Panel \ Network and Internet \ Network Connections

Right click the Local Ethernet Adapter

Click Properties

Click the Configure button

Click the Advanced Tab

Find Network Address in the list and click it.

Look at the Value in the box to the right.

If its blank or all zeros try whacking it this value 00-0C-FF-00-3C-00

IF there is a value in there already then try this:

Go to start type CMD in the search (DO NOT PRESS ENTER)

Right click on the cmd icon and select "Run as Administrator" from the menu

Then issue the following command to completely reset most of the bits that let you get online.

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset reset.log

Proxy was checked, I unchecked it. Didn't fix my problem though, still the same results. :(

Thanks for that. I tried it all. The Network Address had a check next to "not listed" or something like that, so I put in the value you specified. No change.

I tried the CMD stuff as administrator, still no change.

Any more ideas?

Can you get the command prompt up and type IPconfig /all and post the result here?

If you have another computer that is working can you do the same on that an post that also.

One other thing you may try is restoring your PC to a point before the problem occurred using system restore.

Well I can't use system restore, because my machine never created a restore point because of a bug in Windows 7. I mean to fix that as soon as I get the networking back online.

here's my ipconfig:

I set the DNS back to automatic, which set it back to the router. No change.

How do I disable IPv6 in my adapter? The uninstall option is greyed out and I don't see a way to disable it.

I figured out how to disable IPv6, still no change.

I have run a full system scan with BitDefender twice, and it did find something but it was cleaned. I'm trying to run a system file checker, then i'll run BitDefender again.

I finished a malware/antivirus scan. Found a few non-malware things and cleaned them up. Still no 'net.

Rebooted in safe mode with networking, same results.

I haven't restarted my network (router, modem, switch) since the IPv6 change because I don't want to take internet away from my roommates if I don't have to. I may try that later tonight or tomorrow.

Well its fixed, but at what a cost. I reinstalled Windows. It's ok though, because I had to redo the C drive partition to start creating proper backups. My best guess is that it was a registry error of some sort, or something wrong in the Windows installation.

Now my new problem: My C drive is wiped. Its a 128gb SSD which mostly just carries Windows. All my programs and data are stored on my E drive (and I have an F drive as a shadow copy of E). The problem is that all my installed programs are not appearing as installed, because Windows is on a fresh install. Is there any way for me to get all my programs on my E drive to work correctly again without reinstalling all of them?
