Help!! My Computer won't boot after installing a new CPU!

Hey all, I recently purchased a new Intel i7 4790K to replace my old i3. I will list my full specs below. I made sure it fit my LGA 1150 socket, so I know that is not an issue. After a seemingly problemless installation, I powered on the computer, only to find that all the fans began spinning but nothing coming up on the monitor. I've left it like this for a while, and still nothing. I powered it off and turned it back on several times, all to no avail. I read online that I might need to reset my CMOS, which I tried to do by moving the JCMOS1 Jumper on my motherboard, but when I did that the computer was completely unresponsive to my attempts to power it up, and the power button light would not even turn on. As of right now I am out of ideas as to why it isn't working. Please Help.

Motherboard: BioStar b85s3+
GPU: GTX 1050 TI
CPU: (new) intel i7 4790K
Ram: 8b 1 stick
HDD: (2x) WD 1TB
PSU: EVGA 600W

Sorry to hear that, sucks, Newegg should take it back especially with the steps you've taken to get it to work and at least now your BIOS is up to date. If they do test it and find it defective maybe they can send you another one as it's a excellent CPU, even by today's standard.

I moved the jumper, tried to boot and it did nothing, then I moved it back to it's original place and it booted, but only the fans and things are working and I'm seeing nothing on the monitor.

Thanks for the quick reply. So if I were to do that I'd need to re install my i3, and then update the BIOS? How would I update it once I put the i3 back in? And how likely is that to fix it?

Well I think because the BIOS is older that the motherboard won't accept the newer gen CPU (Haswell > Devils Canyon) so the newer BIOS updates fix CPU compatibility issues. There's a few ways to update the BIOS, I would think using the BIOS Update Utility would be the easiest.

Thanks so much. I'm currently in the process of reinstalling the i3, and once I do that I will update you as to how things are going. But now I'm struggling to get the original heat sink on. Ugh. The parts that I'm supposed to push don't want to go in.

Yeah, I might in the future. Right now however, I can't even get the i3's stock cooler back on for some reason. The pins don't want to go back in. Could I use the 4790k's? Would it be okay to mix their stock thermal paste?

Yeah. I successfully got my old i3 running again with the new cooler, and now I am ready to update the BIOS. What would be the best way?

Thanks for all your help. I successfully got my old i3 running again with the new cooler, and now I am ready to update the BIOS. How do I download the BIOS update utility?

Well, I ran the program that you linked me to (thank you for all your help by the way), but once I put the new processor in, the computer stil won't boot. Just the same black screen as before. The i3 still works, but not the i7. I don't know if I impoperly installed the new BIOS or something, but I have no ideas. Thanks for your time, but I still am unsuccessful.

I ordered it off Newegg, and it seemed fine when I got it. When I turn on the computer with it in, the fans start spinning and everything, but nothing happens on the monitor. I guess it is possible that the CPU was dead on arrival, but it seems unlikely. Is there any way I could see my BIOS and see if they are up to date?

This is what it shows, which looks out of date to me. The date is from July 2013, and I don't think that's when the latest update came out.

Yes, it's possible that I downloaded the wrong one. It says version 6.0 on my motherboard so I'll download that version and give it a go. I think I'll check if it updated before I switch processors this time.

Update: After using the BIO-flasher utility and a flash drive, I was successfully able to update the BIOS. However, upon reinstalling the i7 4790K, the system still failed to post. I even confirmed that the BIOS had been updated when I was using the i3. So, it looks like this was a gigantic waste of time, effort, and money. I can only assume that the CPU was dead on arrival, and I will see about refunding it with Newegg, even though I have unboxed it and used its heat sink. Thank you all for your time and help.

Yes, hopefully that can happen. I will have to remove the heatsink before I send it back, as I'm using the one from the i7 because my old one didn't want to connect itself to the motherboard. I may just get a new one altogether. Anyways, thank you so much for your help and time, I really appreciate it.

Cheers, MaliciousBanana
