Help. My GPU is overheating on stock mode.

Hello. I have just purchased my MSI GAMING X GTX 1060 6GB.
and while playing overwatch on 720p + low graphics my gpu's temperature is always around 100C. ive heard that its really unsafe. how do i stop it from overheating?

*I run a i5 6600 and a CORSAIR CARBIDE 100R Windowed edition. ( Cpu has stock cooling )

Sounds like the GPU fan may be bad. Check it first! If all is well, consider installing a water cooler. Although, 100C is outrageously high for that GPU. Might be a bad card...

1. That card runs quite cool... even the FE cards (78C) avoid throttling, something is very wrong with your installation.

2. The fans won't spin unless you are above 60C (140F); Are the fans spinning ?

3. Running at 100C should be impossible, the card should be throttled at any temp above 82C ... are you sure you haven't changed the default temp setting in your measuring utility to read temps as F ?

4. What are you using to measure / have you tried multiple utilities ?

5. What is case and fan setup (No. of fans, size, model, speed, intake / exhaust) ?

should the fan be spinning at 90C? because its not. should i take my pc back? its been already like 2 months i dont think they will take it back.

Absolutely! It should spin at 60C. You might be able to replace the GPU fan, or switch to water cooled if you have room in your system. They prob won't let you return the PC, but they should be able to assist with the issue. Who did you purchase from?

i went to a computer mall and chose my parts. all of my parts were purchased and assembled in 1 shop. my brother has the exact same pc. do you think they will replace the gpu? is my gpu bad or is it a manifacture problem? i already got a broken keyboard that had to be replaced xD

You'd be very lucky if they would replace any component after 2 months, but it never hurts to ask. I'd at least ask them for a discount on a new card if you need one. Tell them that you post to Tom's Hardware forum and will be letting everyone know about the service they give you... good or bad

I doubt the "shop" will take responsibility but card has a 3 year warranty. But before you call them:

1. Take out the card .... make sure to hit the release lever that locks the card in place before yanking on it.

a) Remove 8 pin cable
b) Remove the 2 slot screws
c) Hold down release lever while pulling the card out of slot. Prolly a youtube video if ya wanna see how its done.

2. Examine the card:

a) Try moving the fans with your finger ... do they rotate freely / Do they rub against the shroud ?
b) Are the fan connectors connected ? You can see them here on far right (white with yellow, red, black wires)

c) Check to make sure heat sink / shroud is firmly attached
d) Clean all contacts with isoprophly alcohol (90+%) or contact cleaner. use a foam swap if you choose to clean slot contacts.

3. Correct any deficiencies from above.

4. Replace card in slot making sure that you hear a good "click". Insert screws and connect 8-pin cable.

5. restart system ... if fans no go, call MSI tech Support. After walking you thru some troubleshooting steps, they will give you an RMA is card is still not working.

Im sorry that i wasted your time. i opened the case and turned the fans myself. now they work. should it do that though? should i be worried?
