Ok, my problem is on my imac7 I think its called its a desktop mac with everything in the screen, I have been trying to install os x Yosemite onto it , and all I get now is it "installing on maintosh hd" then it shuts down. then I have to hit the on button for it to power back up and repeat what it just did. I am trying to fix this for a friend so I am not that knowledgeable with macs as I am with pcs. I also tried restarting into safe mode by holding down shift with no luck at all. thanks

Solution
Installing the OS and troubleshooting therein is essentially the same as with a Windows PC.

Crash on OS X install = Bad Media,Bad partition, Bad HDD, or Bad RAM typically.

If its bad media, at the stage of the issue you are at, an erase and reinstall may necessary and may be the most concise solution to this issue as it would resolve a partitioning problem as well. Other option is to download the OS X installer to a USB drive

If its bad partition/filesystem, Erase and Reinstall https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201376

As for Bad RAM and Bad HDD... if it is one of these, well the solution is replace the bad part. If the Mac is 2010 or newer, press and hold D, (Immediately)after you press(and DO NOT hold) the power button to turn it...

This should load the Apple Hardware Tests\Diagnostic, This MAY help you in determining which part has a failure.

Solution

Adding onto that, if holding D dose'nt work, hold Command (the squiggle clover like key) and D after you hear the chime. This will also boot it into diagnostic mode, but it will automatically download the latest Apple diagnostic utilities right to your iMac.
