help needed ASAP

a few days ago one of my external hard drives wouldnt boot up, it sounds and feels like it does but no form of visual reaction on my computer, in bois or otherwise. i beginning to think its a hardware problem or something, but i have ALOT of data i need recovered but i have no idea how.

Let's start with some basic information. What model is the drive that's doing this?

What is the exact model number? If it is just a Hard drive with a USB to SATA adapter you might be able to crack it open and then plug it into the PC directly though a SATA cable but that will void any warranty if it has any.

some of the smaller ones, like the WD Portable and Portable Ultra the USB adapter is built into the main PCB Board then there is nothing you can do except to send it in for data recovery

Can you please share more details about the troubleshooting you have done so far? I'd advise you to try swapping the USB cable and the USB port where you connect the external drive, if you haven't done this already. In case you have access to another system (PC or laptop), you should probably check how the HDD appears there as well. You mentioned that you hear the HDD spin up whenever you connect it to the computer, but I'd also advise you to go to Device Manager & Disk Management in Windows and check if and how your external drive is recognized there. Posting some screenshots from there would help us a lot.
