I am going to upgrade to a 120 gb SSD and install my OS on it. I currently have a 1 TB WD HDD and will use it to store excess stuff. But some people have been telling me to completely format my old HDD after I am done installing windows on my SSD. Why is that? Also, My HDD has 3 partitions and I do want to format my current C drive on the HDD but I dont see the necessity to format the entire HDD. Please tell me what should I do since I only need to format my current C drive. Also, will booting up with my SSD and HDD(with it having my old windows files) affect it before I format my current C drive?

Solution
1. Make a Bootable USB device with the OS you wish to use.
It's explained here if your installing Windows 10. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15088/windows-10-create-installation-media

2. Unplug old Hard drive and install SSD, your physically leaving the drive in the PC it just needs to be not active.

3. Change boot order to Boot "F8 or F10 at boot start" to USB then install OS and do all the updates.

4. Turn off the PC and Plug in the old drive.

5. Change your boot order to Primary SSD "F8 or F10 at boot start" and Boot.

5. Transfer what files you want off your HDD to SSD then format to reuse as Storage.
the reason for that is because you will still have a bootable operating system installed on your old HDD that can cause problems. if you haven't purchased the SSD yet it is recommended to go with at least a minimum of a 250GB SSD drive

you will have to delete all the partitions off your old HDD and then format it. leaving those old system partiton on the old HDD could cause problems too

During the install on the SSD, have all other drives physically disconnected.
Later, reconnect them.

For use of the old HDD, it is much, much easier to move any data you really wish to keep OFF that drive, and wipe all partitions on it. Then, you can move that data back.

Sure, you can reformat just the C partition. That often results in tears, due to accidentally selecting the wrong partition.
And it leaves behind the original boot partitions.

Much much safer to have your personal data elsewhere when you format or manage the partitions on that old HDD.

I see accidents here every single day.
