I am stuck even with 4 walkthroughs. I am at the Voltaic Age and trying to
get through the lava room part. I have to get up to a switch for a fan by
turning
a red knob below. There are three levels on the platform I am on and you
have to
get to the third level. I can get to the second level but can get no
further.
The walkthrough says to put the red knob through the middle slot, but I
haven't been able to do that despite many attempts. All I can manage to do
is move
the big gear above from the left side of the platform to the right. I've
done it about 30
times and am too frustrated now. Am I the only one who has had
problems with this part?

I figured when I saw that Murray found this game not too hard, that it would
be too hard for me, but maybe not too bad, if I used a few walkthroughs, and
the
game was cheap so I took a chance. I am not a Myst fan, didn't like Myst
original,
though Riven was better. I have already finished the first area of the game
(J'nanin),
it wasn't too bad, but this Voltaic age with all these levers and wheels is
not enjoyable
to me, but I am hoping once I get past this age, that the next age will be
more interesting.
Hoping for some great advice to get me outta here.

Have you tried this walkthrough?
http://home.satx.rr.com/adventuregamers/myst3exilewt/MYST3WT.html

It describes the knob movement sequence in fairly good detail, including
the funky mouse movements needed. Here's a non-spoiler quote:

"(To move the red knob grab the red ball, move the little grasping hand
about 1/4 way around and then release. Your little hand may not be able to
stay on that red knob but it doesn't matter. After you release your grasp
the handle will move.)"

Actually, I got past this part after I posted my original post amd
posted a second message.

I have that walkthrough, but for me at least, its very hard on the eyses
with all these different very bright colours against the black
background. I sometimes get migraines from very bright colours against
dark backgrounds, so although its a good walkthrough, I tend to avoid it
except for
screenshots when needed. There are another couple of walkthroughs which
are quite good.

I found my problem was not pulling the red knob down far enough when it
had to encircle to get the platform to move. Theere's a kind of knack to
it which took me long enough to figure out. I've been working on it off
and on for the last couple of days. I did the first age not bad -
J'nanin (with a walkthrough of course), and found it quite interesting
once I figured out the coloured orbs. Thank goodness for walkthroughs,
and thanks to the people who write them.

My comment about you and Myst Exile meant that if you found this game
not too difficult, which I thought you had said, then I would find it
very hard, but maybe not quite as hard as if you said it was very
hard -:)

Thanks Murray.

I liked the Amateria and Edanna ages better than Voltaic.
