Help overclocking i5 3570k using OC Genie 2

Is it safe to simply edit the OC Genie II settings directly in the BIOS? For example, when I apply OC Genie II it's OC's to 4.2ghz, would changing the frequency from 42 to 45 or even 50 be safe? Would it adjust everything else by itself? I haven't yet tried this, but I am curious.

The problem with software OC programs is that they change a lot of settings. They often even change windows registry entries. I don't know of a single OC'er that would recommend using any software based OC tool.

My suggestion: uninstall it, wipe cmos back to factory, go to the sticky in forum for i53570 overclocking guide and follow that to make changes in bios only

It's not something I can just simply uninstall. Understand that this is a new technology built into the board's BIOS itself, not a type of software. CMOS is perfectly fine, no need for a reset in the slightest. This came directly integrated into my board from MSI. Version 1 of OC Genie was also integrated into the motherboard, but instead of enabling it in the BIOS, you had to push a button on the board. I am asking for the people that know how to use OC Genie II and have experience overclocking with IT if it is safe to do what I am asking.

Not a problem haha, I probably should've explained it better! :) So it would be alright for me to set the frequency to something like 45 or 50 and it would adjust itself no problem? Totally safe? I have it under a watercooling block by Corsair, keeps it under 40c constant, under games and such it's not far over 45c. I have 5 other fans in the system running at 2000rpm and I plan on adding a 6th to the radiator for a push/pull effect. Would 50 be safe you think?

I know this question was posted a while ago, but im writing this just in case someone comes by and looks for info. I'm not sure where I learned this, but in the many hours of research ive been doing the past few days on these motherboards and thinking of using the same cpu, I learned that your not supposed to edit the bios when in oc genie mode.

Once you click the OC button, you leave things as they are. If you want to do custom settings, you drop out of the OC mode, hitting that motherboard button, and edit the "normal" bios to do what you want. This should ensure you don't run into any issues, like your settings being changed, or things breaking down.

As I understand it, its effectively two bios, and the button swaps between them, but the OC one certainly has some automation involved.

Edit: Actually single bios, just OC Genie takes over and edits things.

I'm sorry, but that's incorrect. The GD-45 Gaming Edition Motherboard by MSI does not have an on-board physical OC Genie II button. This was more of a feature included in OC Genie I. Unless the specified board does have a physical button, the OC Genie II profile is enabled in the UEFI BIOS of said motherboard.

My knowledge of overclocking and the hardware/BIOS/software zones of computers has increased tenfold since the time of this post, so much so that I now effectively run my own computer business locally. I am more than confident in my personal experience with this board and my knowledge to say this.

Anyways, continuing on.

Doing this to my system has had ZERO effect on my system's stability, performance, or otherwise. It is 100% completely and totally safe. All you are doing is changing the multipliers and voltages, nothing else. OC Genie II automatically determines all the settings appropriate for you, you just need to make small adjustments here and there for a higher overclock. Granted, this is the easiest way to do this, but by no means the most effective or best. It's just a good simple method for new users and veterans alike. I have had my i5-3570k overclocked to 4.5 Ghz from the starting 3.4 Ghz since the time of this post and nothing has gone awry in the tiniest amount. Let me also mention that you're able to safely overclock your RAM through this method as well, however not all Memory supports NICE overclocking, so be careful with that. In other words, do not mess with things you have no knowledge about, become informed first.

On board button, or in bios button, doesn't make a difference. Specifically when you enter OC Genie mode, it changes and replaces bios settings. Your not supposed to edit the bios settings when in that mode. Its not actually two bios' I found out, just one, where the computer takes control of the options. This is specifically about OC Genie II. If you check out the newegg video hardware reviews of motherboards with this feature, they explain how your not supposed to make edits to that.

PS: if your gonna tell someone their wrong, quote the part they are wrong about, not the whole thing. Im not wrong about my info, just whether or not your board had the onboard button, I honestly didn't even check whether your motherboard had the button on board or not because A. it doesn't even matter as it makes not difference between that and the bios button, and B. the majority of motherboards with OC Genie II installed have that button, which is pretty much all the motherboards I had just been looking at.

Whenever you overclock a processor your are ALWAYS editing the BIOS. That's exactly how you overclock. If you can give me hard evidence and reason on why I am not supposed to edit the BIOS, then please, feel free. Because what you're saying makes zero sense in the way you're explaining it. How in what way is this method harmful? If you're basing your knowledge off of Newegg reviews then you're already in the wrong. Not to mention if you've never had personal experience overclocking with an OC Genie board. Otherwise there's no point in continuing, because neither one of our opinions matter as it's the users choice to do what they want whether someone else deems it right or wrong. It's ultimately their choice and responsibility.

Skept, you specifically asked if it was safe to edit the bios settings when using OC Genie. The answer I gave which is no, isn't wrong. For example if you search MSI's forums, you see this same answer come up there. Heres a random thread where someone asks about it.

Don't act like a jerk, when people are trying to give you the information your asking for. The last thing I want, is for some new user to come here and see the comments you guys ignorantly threw around without research, and get messed up by editing the bios with OC Genie enabled. Your milage will of course vary, and its cirtainly not gauranteed to mess up your system, but it could, because of how it works, which again is why I said no. and why people on the offical forum also say the same.

Unless you aboslutely need to, DON'T EDIT YOUR BIOS WHILE USING OC GENIE!
(drop to normal bios mode and copy the settings OC Genie used if you really want)

Name calling is entirely unnecessary, you're flaming an old thread and breaking the communities guidelines by doing so. You created your account on the 15th of this month and replied solely to this thread, that of which is over 5 months old. You do not have personal experience with this issue, nor have you said that you've ever worked with OC Genie before, only that your information is based off of forums and newegg reviews. The included forum that you posted a link to contains no relevant information to this thread, nor does it provide the same model motherboard being talked about in this thread. Because of this, the information you provided is untrustworthy and inaccurate. I have personal experience with OC Genie and overclocking with the edited settings in OC Genie and can CONFIRM that there is zero harm that can be done through utilizing this method as I have had my i5-3570K overclocked from 3.5Ghz to 4.5Ghz for over 5 months now with zero issue in stability. I monitor my PC daily through CPU-Z and HWinfo and can confirm that all 4 of my cores are locked at 4.5Ghz constantly with a continuous voltage at under 42c in temperature. This thread was solved the 5 months ago that it was created and was replied to by multiple overclocking authorities that have much more experience in this matter than myself or you. Please stop flaming this thread. If you reply again, I will proceed to report abuse and get an admin. Thank you.
