Here is the set up:
Case: Powermax YT-040267-85 0327-4 PL 400 watt
Memory: Samsung 256mb PC2700 CL2.5
Processor AMD XP2000+
Board K7S5A Pro
Liteon 48x24x48 CDRW

I have tried three hard drives and Windows 98SE and Windows XP
Professional. Every time Windows starts the install program,
the PC locks up. I can run scan disc, format, and other disk
diagnostic programs but Windows install locks up every time.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

The first thing I would try, assuming the buss speeds are correct, is to
enter the bios and set it for "fail safe". You are doing a fresh install
aren't you?

Try using clear CMOS jumper. See if it'll boot to DOS or stay stable in
the bios setup screen or if it still crashes.

Check cards/cables/etc for proper seating. Check fans and that heastink
is properly seated. Check voltage and heat levels.

Run http://www.memtest86.com on memory, always, before trying to install
OS on a new build or changed memory configuration.

There were a large percentage of earlier K7S5A (non-pro) boards that were
quite flaky, subject to memory errors (particularly with PC133 memory in
both slots) and "appeared" to need specific power suppies with high 5V
rail voltage though later it seemed they just had low-quality power
regulation and potentially defective capacitors. I heard several people
report that the "Pro" version was "fixed" but the non-pro seemed ok when
new too, just rapidly degraded in function. So it seems quite possible
the pro version could similarly work good, seemed "fixed" when new but
again degrade in function later, after aged. I still won't touch one,
not worth the hassle IMHO, with so many other viable boards out there.
Point being that _IF_ your board has a problem it may be a long and
frustrating troubleshooting period before you give up on it and replace
the board.

Then there's the power supply... seems like a questionable generic to me
so if you had another PSU handy it might be worthwhile to try another one.

I had the same thing happen to me. Was a flakey power supply. I've
heard of PowerMax, but am not familiar with how reliable they are. I
recommend Antec.

I once had that problem and it turned out to be faulty memory.

In the last two days I've tried two other memory sticks. I tried
DDR PC2100 and DIMM PC133. I cleared the CMOS before trying each
new memory. Got the same results with each. It will only run if
under clocked.
