PC: Core i3 4160, Asus H81m-K mainboard, 2x4GB Adata Ram, Thermaltake Power Supply 500w

I just changed my CPU from a G3220 to a i3 4160, and after installation my PC is constantly turning off and on. I removed the RAM stick from DIMM (Slot A1) and now my PC is running fine. I tried switching the RAM sticks but the issue still remains. my PC only power cycles when I'm using that Specific RAM Slot but it boots just fine when using the 2nd slot with either sticks.

By the way, the faulty slot is nearest to the CPU. Did I somehow damage it during installation ? I didn't even touch the RAM slots or the RAM during installation.

What could be causing the power cycles ?

Please advise.

Solution
Maybe it's not disabling the slot but shorting out. Something is wrong with slot 1. It's either a broken trace on the motherboard, which can happen if you used a screwdriver to remove old heatsink and possibly scratched it or memory controller, which is on the CPU, which connects to the pins.

Removing the CPU and looking for the pins bent as in the pic posted above would confirm it.

Not trying to argue with you, but it's a more than common problem on here. On a 4 ram slot motherboard, it would affect slots 1,3 or 2,4.

I updated my Bios to latest but still no luck. Is there anyway to know if the pins are damaged or not ?

I agree with getochkn, above. Prolly a bent pin in the CPU socket. BTDT!

Take the system apart, remove the MOBO, inspect the CPU socket pins with a magnifying glass under a bright light source.

You may be able to bend it back, but it could also break off and you'd have to replace the MOBO.

Another solution: I notice that you only have 2 sticks of RAM. Try using DIMM slots #2 and #4.

Without removing the CPU and examining the MB, no way to know but since the CPU has the memory controller built in, it's that or you some broke a trace somewhere going to that slot. If the slot worked before you swapped CPU's, than odd's are you damaged something.

Here's what to look for:

May be something got damaged, but if something was wrong in the CPU socket, how would the PC run fine when using DIMM slot 2 (by the way the H81m-k has only two DIMM slots). The problem only occurs when using DIMM Slot 1.

Maybe your on the mark, but if there was something wrong with a specific portion which disable DIMM 1, the PC would still start when both RAMS are connected since DIMM 2 is working fine. Why would it power off and on only when that Slot is in use ?

Holy Sh*t Guys...it worked !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I used a very thin allen key to unbent the pins, my pc is running with both RAMS detected and no more power cycle.....Thanks a billion to all for your quick and effective responses. You guys just turned my almost sh*tty day into a great one. Cheers...
