My 280x is getting extremely poor preformance. I turn down the quality and still the same thing. Is this a problem with r9 200 series?
Any ideas on what I could do to fix this?
Specs:
XFX R9 280x
Asus m5a97 le 2.0
8gb of ram
AMD fx 8320

I think the cooling isn't great on the XFX. Download HWmonitor and check your temps whilst gaming. What temps are you CPU/GPU getting?

Sounds like overheating throttling. Also, what is your power supply make/model power?

By poor performance, are you getting the same frame rate no matter what settings. If so put your computer on it's side and see if it keeps happening(odd little trouble shoot but if that works say.)

Ok I'll have to download that.
When I was in the BIOS earlier it said my CPU was running at about 50°C but I'm not sure about my GPU.
My power supply is a corsair 750w.

Not the best psu, should work though. Tell us when you get the temps for the gpu.

Hmmm HWmonitor is registering my GPU as the Radeon 7970... I don't think that matters but it says its running at 69C while playing Far Cry 4 on high settings.

That sounds about right, what fps do you get?

I was averaging 60 but I get these terrible fps drops where I only get 10-20 fps that lasts a while. It doesn't matter what game I play, it does it in pretty much every one.

Have you tried any overclocking?

No

Try putting the pc on it's side. The gpu has a tiny amount of strain on it and this can then make it sit a tiny bit off in the PCI slot after it heats up a bit. I had this problem and so I suggest just give it a try.

Alright, I'll give it a shot.
And this isn't bad for the pc is it? Could it damage my hard drive?

No it wont, some cases are meant to be put sideways so parts have to be able to do it. I had my pc like that for around 3 months.

Wow never crossed my mind, I think far cry had stuttering if it was played online but maybe i'm just thinking of watch dogs and AC U.

You are quoting games that were notorious for having stuttering issues and bad performance! :p

Some are console ports which are optimised really bad so you have to tweak them a bit to get it working. Far cry 4 constantly stuttered on my PC until I updated my graphics card drivers. Also fixed Watchdogs.

I trust you have bought these games legally and not cracked them?
