I might have messed up. I had steam installed on my SSD on C: drive (OS, Win 10) but had all my games on a different HDD (D:). I wanted to completely uninstall steam and install it on the same drive/folder as the games (the SSD isn't mine and gotta return) so I copied all the folders in steamapps/common. Now doing some searching I know NOW this isn't how you do a backup and I should have used the backup feature from steam itself.

I copy pasted the folders back in the folder where steam is installed and let the game detect the folders and verify but it tries to download the whole game(s) again. I cannot afford to download everything again 🙁 Am I SoL ?

Solution
Check that the new install location is set as Steam Library Folder (settings>downloads and there click steam library folders). It should have a line like 'D:\Porgram Files(x86)\Steam', if your new steam location isn't listed add it to the list and make it as default install location.
