Hi guys, I'm sure you have seen a million of posts like this before, but im afraid here is another! I basically just want a new graphics card, i'v upgraded my PC recently to these specs,
6gb Ram, a 1Tb hard-drive, I5 processor, and i think the current graphics card is a Intel HD 20.
I'm a complete computer noob so any help would be great!
I have a mirai monitor, roughly 19" so i think maybe the resolution is around 1,280 x 1,024?
I'm looking to spend between £120-200, as im looking to play most modern games comfortably!
thanks for your time!

Hi mate,
Erm.. yeah battefield 3, Arma 2, Skyrim, etc you know, those sorts of games, and no i don't mate :)!
Cheers

the graphics you have i think is a intel hd 2000, this is not a card, its inbuilt to your i5 processor, before you add a card check your power supply is big enough (over 400w at least), and make sure your motherboard has a full size pci-e slot

if its all good have a look at the 560ti, its got better dx11 performance over the 400 series, better for newer games
and AbdullahG is right, if your not gonna get a bigger monitor a 460 will do fine
i think getting a 24" monitor should be your next goal as most new games are practically designed for 1920x1080 these days

i see i see, okay so check my power supply can handle the card, and that the card can fit, and basically your saying with my monitor, i don't need anything over the 400 series?
so look at 560ti? or the 460 ?

Unless you are going to upgrade the monitor in the not too distant future you would be simply wasting money by getting anything more powerful than an HD6850/GTX 460. Even those are overkill really. For your current monitor something like an HD6770 would be the best choice for the money and give you excellent performance.

Ok guys, I'm going to have a look at the 6850, and the 560!
thanks very much for your help, if i upgrade my monitor I will let you know!
cheers for all the replys and help
Peace

Hey guys,
so sorry, before my rough guess of the resolution was wrong, ha, it kicks out about 1680 x 1050, does this affect what card i select in anyway~?

If you are not planning to play battlefield 3 kind of games on maxed out settings, then that cards are fine. medium settings will be smooth enough to play.
First, check your power supply wattage..!!

ah crap, i just looked at the wattage it's only 350 :/ also i think im going to be limited by the PCI slots, which are:
PCI-E x1 slots (free) 2 (2)
PCI-E x16 slots (free) 1 (1)

I agree with jyjjy. Even at 1680x1050, a HD6770 will do very well.
The strongest card you might safely run on an unknown PSU that has no PCIE power connector (NEVER use adapters in this case!) is a HD6670. This card will handle any older games on your current resolution, but newer ones will need their settings turned down to no better than "Medium." The screen shots I've seen of games like the BF3 beta, WoW, and SC2 show them looking pretty darn good at only medium, so if you cannot afford to also upgrade the PSU you'll still be able to enjoy your games. With a budget of 200GBP though, I think you should be able to afford a HD6850 or GTX460 and a quality 500W PSU like an Antec Earthwatts or Corsair Builder. At the lower end of 120GBP, a HD6770 and a good 430W-500W PSU should be in reach.

Edit: Your PSU can handle a HD6670. If it has a PCIE power cable (unlikely), it may be able to handle a HD6770; do you know what brand and model it is?

You have one PCI-e X16, and 350watt power supply.
I think you can get a decent card for that build.
Go for ATI radeon HD 5450 1GB. That can be possible to run on a 350watt PSU.
Or see if you can change your PSU to a better one.

Thanks for the advice guys! :)
ok so like you said, i think I want to upgrademy PSU so i can therefore run a better card, but do you know of any good website's where i an purchase one? or what kind of PSU's i need to be looking at, as im thinking something around 600w?

You won't need a 600W PSU unless you're looking at video cards MUCH stronger than you need, like a HD6970 or GTX580.
A quality model in the 500W range is sufficient for anything else; 450W for a HD6850 or GTX460. A quality modern PSU has full range active PFC (no little voltage switch) and some level of 80+ certification for efficiency. Seasonic, Antec, Corsair, XFX, and Enermax/LEPA are among the better brands. FSP has some good models too, and I think they are available across the pond.

awesome, cheers dude!

Chirag, a HD5450 is NOT a gaming card; it is suitable for a HTPC but not games. The weakest card the OP should consider is the HD6670. On a budget, with less than maxed settings, it would not be insufferable. Fwiw, my mostly older games (e.g. Guild Wars, UT2K4) can be maxed, including AA, at 1920x1080 using a HD6670. Newer games will definitely need something stronger to play maxed, but don't be convinced by people with more money than sense that you "need" a 200GBP GPU to enjoy games. Get what you can comfortably afford.
