[SOLVED] Help trouble shooting my PC please?

I took out a PC that used to work previously, haven't touched it in a year or so. When I tried powering it up, the power came on and then cut off after about 5 seconds. I thought it might be a PSU issue, so I removed the ATX 12V Power Connector and tried to see if the power got cut but it didn't.

Tried putting the ATX 12V Power Connector cable back, and power got cut off again after 5 seconds. Can anyone tell me what this means? I have a ASRock Z77 Extreme 4M Mobo.

Update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS.

Any "beep codes" or LED diagnostics?

Only noting a power LED - is that LED lit? (Reference User Manual, Page 13.)

What about the LAN port: any colors showing?

Power down, unplug, open the case and check that all cables, card seatings, RAM, jumpers, etc. are fully and firmly in place.

Install a new CMOS battery.

Next thought would be to reapply thermal paste.

Thanks. I will report back on findings though I am curious why thermal paste (or lackof) might be potentially causing this since it is powering off only after 5 seconds?

The thermal paste conducts heat away from the CPU.

Otherwise the CPU will get very hot, very quickly, and self-destruct.

So when the temperature goes up quickly the CPU automatically shuts the system down to protect itself.

You can google for more information by using words such as "CPU thermal shutdown" etc..
