Hi Tom's Forum,

Back in Feb I put together a custom budget gaming pc for my son.
MSI B450 Pro
AMD Ryzen 5 2600x
Chione CPU cooler( gamdias)
Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM 2 x 8GB
Fatboy 590 GPU
Corsair CX 550 WATT Supply

3 intake fans in the front of the Aerocool case. 1 exhaust in the back and I got some custom cut plexiglass and mounted a side exhaust fan for the fatboy.

I used to have issues with over heating , but with the side case fan and the Radeon software to speed up the fans has helped a bit with cooling. The system used to crash playing COD - low settings because of heat. Been good so far- but recently I have experienced low temps and freezing of the game. I tried to read a crash report but I really don't know how to decipher the alien language.

I'm wondering what I can do to pinpoint what's going on? How can i view detailed crash reports from the PC. Would upgrading my GPU be beneficial with my current setup?

Thanks in advance. Just trying to get some experienced thoughts to sort out this annoyance.

Ya unfortunately the two fan mounts are directly above the PSU so all the heat was getting blown onto the card. I went and bought a plexiglass and cut out a hole and mounted an exhaust fan. It's directly inline with the card blowing out the heat. I wonder if I should flip the fan and have air coming in and blowing on the card itself ?

But with this setup , and using the software to increase the fan speed on the card I have been able to keep temps to around 75-80 C whilst gaming . I think 77C is the average
oh no, the fan on the gpu acts as an intake and hot air gets blasted around the gpu, make the 2 exhaust as intakes ASAP

The Fatboy is a bit of a Hotboy so if upgrading is an option, I'd certainly consider it from the temperature point of view as well as the increase in performance. If you want to try and pinpoint what's causing the crashing, you could look in event viewer and reliability history (latter only on W10).

If you can fit another exhaust fan either in the back or the top of the case, I'd do that and swing the Fatboy's exhaust fan 180 and have it pulling in cool air from outside and blowing it at the card.

Has your motherboard been updated to the latest drivers and BIOS?
Have you tried doing a clean reinstall of your graphics drivers using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller)?
I think so. But I'll check haven't really checked actually.

And also maybe worth a shot to install the latest drivers again.

I did read about the Fatboy. Saw a youtube channel where the guy took it apart and explained it in depth. I was thinking of taking of the metal cover and doing the thermal grease again. But with the side fan and the Reason software I really haven't had an over heating issue anymore.

I can fit another fan. But I also am thinking of upgrade. I wanted to try the gtx 3060 but that's pricey. I saw a used 1070ti and almost got one. But would only benefit from the heat issue ?

I saw another thread in the trending section that mentioned freezing. I forgot which since I was at my work PC. But after I did a "freezing" keyword search (which I should have done first) and found lots of similar sysmtpoms. Good info in there. I'll update this week. Already feel better just knowing there's great info here.

I'm pretty sure it's GPU related. Everything is sold out too , at least what I have been willing to upgrade too.

Haven't play COD this weekend on the PC . Got stuck doing Easter eggs in infinite warfare on the console 😂

Sorry for the triple post , but reading more info I realized that my PSU is a grade D tier?! LOL that's not awesome . I was going to grab a used 1080ti gtx 11GB but I wonder if my supply is adequate.

Are you certain your specific PSU is a low quality model? Not all CX models are identical.

Well I was reading a post here https://forums.tomshardware.com/thr...for-1080ti-ryzen-5-2600.3671300/post-22111571

It pointed to the tier list in one of the replies. I have the CX-M 550 Bronze class.

I'm upgrading my system RAM to 32GB . I found a kit for 129$ Same Vengeance LPX 3.2GHz speed except x2 16GB sticks.

I found this interesting video about how the 12v rail becomes unstable on a lower end PSU .Testing 550W mid range psu with 1080ti Or "budget" rather .

I wanted to get the 1080ti used but I may just wait until prices and stock become stable again.

I did update my Bios to the latest build. I also noticed that A-XMP wasn't turned on. I want to do the DDU to fresh install my drivers. I saw the sticky here at the forums that explains it real nice.

When I go to the AMD site however I only see a download for Adrenaline .EXE file. Where can I find just the driver?

Try using the "Auto-Detect and Install" option under Windows 10.

Regarding to overheating, you should undervolt it, it'll help the thermals a bit, and if your case have 2 extra fan mounts om the bottom, add 2 intake fans under the gpu so that it has direct airflow from the fan

I flipped the fan around , installed 32GB kit of RAM , turned on A-XMP , updated drivers , turned the settings down on COD and so far so good.

Playing 3 hrs and temp of card (according to the Afterburn) 65C . Can't even notice a difference of quality really.

I'm happy 😁 thanks all
