When upgrading from 6gb (4gb+2gb) to 8gb (4gb+4gb) should I just get 1 4gb and replace the 2gb stick or should I buy 2 4gb ramsticks?

Solution
The best thing to do is to buy a new 2x4GB RAM kit. Mixing RAM sticks is not always a good idea. But if you're going from 6 GB, then if budget is not much of a concern, then you can get 16 GB (2x8 GB) RAM for a much better upgrade. DDR3 RAM is cheap these days.
Depending on what type of RAM you are buying for the second RAM slot, make sure it is a comparable to your original 4GB. If its not comparable then just by 2 4gb sticks it would just be easier. Link the RAM you have and what you are looking at.

Agreed depending on your budget and what your Motherboard can handle its always better just to do a fresh upgrade.
