I currently own i3 6100, an r9 380 4gb sapphire nitro. Its a budget 500 dollar mini itx console killer I built a while back but now that I LOVE PC GAMING, I feel like upgrading. I already have an intel motherboard, soo should I go for an i5 or should I get a new motherboard and get a ryzen 1600x?

Really depend on the budget. You'll be able to pick up an i5 for about 2/3 the cost of a Ryzen chip + motherboard, but a Ryzen5 chip is going to give you more cores, and overclockability (on a budget).

Personally, I'd opt for the Ryzen5 1600 and 2800MHz+ RAM, and sell the i3+Mobo+RAM combo you currently have.

You'll be able to get the 1600 up past the stock performance of the 1600X, with a lower TDP.
