I just purchased an MSI B360 Gaming PLUS to use with my i5-9400f. MSI website said that i could use 9th gen intel CPU's with it: https://cdn1.bbcode0.com/uploads/2020/10/27/c993fdab82fdfccf409fb51c024e4dbb-full.png
Box arrived today and it says that it is compatible with 8th gen intel processors(no mention of 9th gen). Pls help me. Is it still going to work with an i5-9400f? do i need to install new bios? I do not have the CPU yet, nor have i ordered it. If i need a different CPU, can someone recommend an LGA1151 8th gen Intel CPU? Budget is $165 USD. My region is USA.

Specs:
CPU: ??

GPU: MSI Radeon RX 480 Gaming X 8G

RAM: ADATA XPG Z1 16GB DDR4 U-DIMM 3000mhz

MOBO: MSI B360 Gaming PLUS

PSU: (Pending, i have a crappy Apex 500w that i am too scared to use)

MSI B360 Gaming Plus - CPU Support List
Clearly the Intel Core I5-9400F is supported, but the BIOS may need to be upgraded before you can use it. If this is the case, then you would need a natively supported processor (8th Gen) to update the BIOS before you attempt to install the 9th Gen 9400F.

The problem is that there is no way of knowing what BIOS version has been installed on the motherboard you receive. If it has not been updated, you would need the 8th gen processor as mentioned above or you could take it to a local PC shop and have them update the BIOS for you (typically at a cost, but if you also purchase the processor from them, they may waive the cost of the BIOS update).

If you don't want to deal with any of that...

The MSI B360 Gaming PLUS does support Intel 9th generation CPU , but with the BIOS version 7B22v24 or newer.
If your motherboard happens to arrive with an earlier BIOS version, you will have to get an 8th generation CPU, upgrade the BIOS then install a 9th generation Intel CPU.

could i just buy a 8th gen lga1151 cpu from amazon with free returns, update the BIOS by downloading it from the MSI website, and return the CPU?

Yes, you could, but this is generally considered a shady business practice. You have no intention of keeping the 8th gen processor and the seller now has to re-sell it at a used/refurbished cost. Again, there is no way of knowing what BIOS version you will actually get, so if you purchase the 8th gen and you don't need it...

Honestly, I'd look to the option of your local PC shop (if available).

Why not return the board and get the right one?
