On my new 8600 (XP Home/512 ram) there are two network status icons on the
system toolbar by the clock. They always show disconnected because the laptop
isn't networked. I went into the network setup in the control panel and
checked to see if the box for "Show status" was checked, but it wasn't. All I
really want to see in that toolbar is the clock. How do I remove the status
icons without disabling the network settings?

Try double-clicking each icon and find the Properties page of each
icon where there is the "Show status in Task bar" (or something
similar). If it is already unchecked, check it, OK your way out,
reboot, go back in and uncheck it. That may just do it.
