My bro in law is putting together a system for his step son. I’d like to help him but my knowledge of current cpus etc is a bit rusty - I used to know exactly what was ideal. If asked budget and he has said ‘as little as poss’ which is not useful but I think basic gaming/Fortnite is where we are at.

so far he has suggested:

ASUS GEFORCE GTX 1050TI PHOENIX 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-EXPRESS GRAPHICS CARD

KOLINK KLA-003 MIDI TOWER CASE - BLACK

GIGABYTE Z390 UD INTEL Z390 (SOCKET 1151) DDR4 ATX

INTEL CORE I5-9400F 2.90GHZ (COFFEE LAKE) SOCKET LGA1151 PROCESSOR - RETAIL

now I would’ve thought the RX570 is better value for a gfx card but bit lost on rest, not to mention he’s omitted a few components - I’ve told him a ssd boot drive is a must. Any pointers to best value components around this mark would be great - or even an off the shelf that provides good value. Thanks

if youre building a value system id go for a b450 socket with a ryzen 3300x for the mobo/cpu combo. As for the GPU, i bought an rx580 8gb for 80$ off the app Letgo a few weeks ago. If youre really looking for budget-friendly components, buying a 2nd hand GPU is definitely the way to go. If you must have all brand-new hardware i think an rx 580 or a 1650 is the way to go. a 1050ti isnt bad but its getting to be pretty outdated.

16gb of ddr4 is only like 50-60$ now, so make sure to get at least 3200mhz RAM.

You can get a 128gb m.2 SSD for like 30$. Id put windows, steam, and maybe 1 or 2 games on here. You can get another 500gb 2.5" SSD for like 40-50$. Thats like 80$. Or you could just spend like 75-100$ on a 500gb or 1TB m.2...

Youre also gonna need a PSU, probably atleast 400w to accomplish what youre doing. PSUs are fairly expensive these days. Once again, if youre truly trying to do it "as cheap as possible" you can try to find an old office computer someone has laying around and pull the PSU out of it. As long as its an ATX form factor and youre not trying to heavily overclock all your components it should be reliable.

Its a great time to be building a new PC, you can some insane value these days, not to mention if your patient and persistant you will find some KILLER DEALS over the next couple months between black friday and holiday sales.
