Hello,
I have this motherboard https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-990FXA-UD3-rev-30#ov and I have two eSATA ports on the back of my PC.
I've got a few 3.5 inch SATA drives left from my NAS box and I want to connect them to the desktop PC and securely erase them.

If I understand the game correctly my MB has only eSATA (without power) - I though that this should be written in the mainboard manual but it not.
So I assume I have eSATA not eSATAp. That's why I decided to get this cable - https://www.ebay.com/itm/2851641357...ar=587038075143&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

but what confuses me is that all the cables I found the same type all mentioning only 2.5 inch disks, no 3.5 inch support at all.

So can you briefly explain me why is that, and how to solve my issue?
Thanks.

The two SATA ports you see on the rear of the motherboard is tethered to the Marvell 88SE9172 chip as stated in your motherboard manual;
https://download1.gigabyte.com/File....3.x_e.pdf?v=11b78dca8c323190c22323ea98a94222
and the motherboard's specs's page.

all mentioning only 2.5 inch disks, no 3.5 inch support at all
If you compare a 2.5" drive and a 3.5" drive's power and data connectors,
they are one and the same.

You might want to read through this;

Get an eSATA enclosure rather than just a cable. Something like this -- https://www.newegg.com/startech-s351bmu33et-enclosure/p/N82E16817707441
The problem with the cable is the USB port can't guarantee enough power.

"The problem with the cable is the USB port can't guarantee enough power. " seems logic :))

Undestood I just wanted to be sure. Probably this is the reason they say - only 2.5 inch SSD is supported

Here I found the info I'm looking for, but yeah as you mentioned above - 3.5 inch hard drives need more power.

Compact 7-pin (SATA data) and 15-pin (SATA power) SATA to USB 2.0 cable. It has an additional USB connector to obtain power from two USB ports, so it does not require an external power supply when the hard disk works with 5VDC. 3.5 "hard drives require 12VDC, so they do require additional power supply. 2.5" and 1.8 "hard drives are powered from the SATA-USB connector itself, so they do not require additional power supply.
