I have the chance to by a case used but in real good shape for a very good price.

When I go to connect the front panel cables, some will be fairly obvious of course.

My question is this, if I connect a cable to the wrong motherboard terminal, will that part simply not work, or can I cause damage?

Solution
If your case is a branded OEM, Dell, HP, etc, some cabling is different. If all the parts you are dealing with are standard ATX or BTX, the pinouts should be standardized. Research the pinout arrangements. You don't want to plug in the wrong ones. There is a chance you can damage the motherboard or a device that you plug in. You can find pinout arrangements for nearly everything on the internet. If you don't know the names of things, guess the name and use the "images" search on Google.
