Help with motherboard 9-pin front panel headers universal?

I've got a Vostro 220 MT, motherboard manufacturing number "Y312K", with this info on the back of my mobo: Foxconn ML1 94V-0 E25311.

I'm installing the components from my Vostro 220 MT (plus other upgrades I've made) into the Cooler Master Storm Scout.

Here's the issue:
Dell has a combined plug responsible for the power switch, HDD activity LED, and power light LED that plugs into the front panel header of the motherboard (see picture of front panel header here: http://i46.tinypic.com/ea5hev.jpg )

The CM Storm Scout has the front panel header plugs in individual pairs (i.e. a 2 pinhole connector for each of these: "POWER SW" "RESET SW" "HDD LED" "POW LED+" "POW LED-").

Now:
I've been researching front panel header pin wirings, and I only find diagrams that are all similar to this: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-009016.htm

When I compare the wiring of the original Vostro front panel header plug:
1) The HDD LED wires and the power LED wires match up in the same spots as the Intel diagram above (1/3 and 2/4 respectively, but I'm not sure about their polarity! Does it matter?)
2) However, the wires that run to the power switch do not match with the diagram, and are instead in position 5 and 6! Once again, I don't know the polarity of these wires either!

So:
What do I do?


Note: already searched Foxconn website and can't find any info; already talked with Dell support twice and only received a little help

Follow that diagram, and see what happens. The polarity doesn't matter too much. If you get the +/- mixed up, they just won't work. If the power switch is on 5/6, rotate it to cover 6/8.

Follow the pattern for the +/-. The power/HD LEDs are labeled for the polarity. So follow that same pattern for the power and reset switches. The colored wire is +.

Thanks for the input aford10, but on the original Dell case I have there was no reset switch available, hence on 5/6 instead of 6/8.

Not sure if this matters, but in the original Dell case there is also a black wire looping from 6&10

Since you're switching to the CM case, the front panel wiring is different. Give it a shot, it may take some trial and error.

From your diagram, pin 10 is empty.

Oh whoops, meant to say the wire was looping from 5&9

Is it possible to just hook up the front panel wires and the power supply to the motherboard and turn on the computer (without hard drives, graphics card) just to avoid frying any additional components IF that occurs?

Yes. If you want, you can boot with just the CPU/HSF, PSU, 1 RAM chip, and power switch.

Like aford says, the LED's are polarized. If you get them backwards (they do not illuminate, just reverse them. The switches are not polarized. And polarity does not matter with the system speaker.

This seems to be a recurring problem that trips people up, me included. I've a Gigabyte ga-81dmnf mobo, with 17-pin front panel connector. Problem is, my case only has a ribbon cable terminating in paired pin sockets (reset, LEDs etc) and I don't know which two mobo pins to connect the power switch to. Was working fine until I fitted a DVD-R drive - must have dislodged it accidentally.
I understand that polarity doesn't matter for the switch, but am I right to think that it doesn't matter which pins I try because, until the correct power switch pins are found, nothing will be live anyway?
