Help with re-image hd

My daughter has a older Dell computer and has several viruses and she wants
to just restore the hd. I tried running ZZTOP but it keeps failing the
integrity check. Is here any way around this or will I need to reformat the
C: drive and start over. I have never used this utility but understand it
re-images the hd back to time of build.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

ZZTOP only works for a short period of time after initial use - chances are
parts of the file have been overwritten.

If you need to redo the system, it will have to be manually.

Can the viruses be removed without having to reinstall from scratch ? -
if she had any updates installed, reinstalling from scratch would open
potentially large amounts of security holes until she managed to get all
the patches installed again.

Depending on the virus (which is likely to be one of the better known
ones if any - i`ve not seen any unknown / unheard of viruses for a good
number of years now) then perhaps this single executable might be able to
resolve some of the issues to start with:

ftp://ftp.kaspersky.com/utils/clrav.com (its 301k in size)

It runs from within windows and covers most of the "show stoppers" from
the last few years - it has 4 possible outcomes (briefly ):

Nothing found
Found problems and sorted them
Found some, sorted what I could, but reboot and re-run to complete
Program error

It currently does these with the version last updated 9th July `04

Hello,

If you are running an older Dell computer, I am going to assume that you
intend to reload Windows 98SE?

If so, you can try the following:

Get your Windows 98 Boot floppy (if you do not have one, have someone create
one for you on a Win98 machine)

Turn the machine completely off and upon restart, immediately go into the
system BIOS.

Be sure that your system is setup in the BIOS to boot from floppy 1st then
CD-ROM 2nd

Power system down

Insert WIN98 boot floppy and restart system. The system should then boot
from the Win98 Boot Floppy.

Tell it not to boot with CD-Rom Support

Once you get to the A: prompt, type in "fdisk"

Select option 4 to view disk partitions and make note of what you see

Delete all partions starting with logical drives, non-dos partitions,
extended partitions and primary partition.

Select option 1 to create a primary partition. You might have to create
other partitions depending on the disk size

Afterwards, you will need to reboot system and again from WIN98 boot floppy

Format all new partitions you created (C:/D: etc etc etc.)

Afterwards, run command "sys c:"

Restart system with floppy removed and Windows 98SE CD in CD Rom Drive. You
should boot from the CD and be ready for OS installation.

If you need XP instructions, let us know.

I downloaded and ran this utility and the results were "Nothing found in
memory". I did order the Microsoft security update which should plug some of
the holes before going back on line.

Thanks for your help,

Don

Thanks for the detailed info, it looks like this is the only solution with
this computer.
