Hey,

I am about to finish building my new PC:

P4 3.0Ghz
1Gb Dual Channel DDR400 (2x512 Geil)
GeForce FX5900
Pioneer DVD burner
LG DVD/CD burner combo

and the two most important bits relating to this question...

A Maxtor 120Gb SATA HDD, and a Gigabyte GA-81PE1000 Pro2 mobo. From what I
understand this board does not support RAID (read that in a review somewhere
but can't remember where).

Just about everything is in the case, and I am getting ready to finish off
and look to installing Windows XP Pro.

Can someone please tell me if this sounds right for correctly setting up the
SATA drive:

1) Copy files from GB disc to floppy so I can use this at install time
(press F6...). That should install the drivers for the windows to recognise
the HDD. Or should I download them from GB, and if so which ones should I
grab?

2) Configure boot sequence and BIOS as follows:
SATA/RAID/SCSI Boot Order ---> set to "SATA"
First Boot Device ---> CDROM
Second Boot Device ---> SCSI
Third Boot Device ---> None.

Am I going OK or not??

Many thanks,

Damien

Your motherboard based on the i865 chip from intel and therefore the
onboard SATA-Controller does not support RAID.

Which drivers? There are no drivers for the SATA controller within the
i865. You have to go into your BIOS and open "Integrated Peripherals".

Set On-Chip-SATA to manual Set SATA Port0 Configure as SATA Port0.

Gigabyte User's manual for this board page 46.

I am just wondering, where you can configure the boot sequence as you
described. On page 43 I find HardDisk Boot Priority, but no detailed
description, what I can select.

You may test it. I have just changed from GA-8IPE1000Pro to
GA-8IK1100. I will use the onboard SATA-Controller for the CD-Writer
/DVD-ROM Combo MSI XA52P and the Plextor PX-712SA.

I would also like to know where he bought the SATA DVD drive, it's
interesting to see these SATA optical drives, even though they offer no
performance increase.

Though they do get rid of an IDE cable and the novelty of having the latest
and greatest, i personally got the IDE version of the 712A. Sadly Newegg are
not stocking the SATA version of the new Plextor drive so i missed out.

:-(
