Hi Guys,

I have a homebuilt PC (Pentinum 4 HT on a Intel 865GBF Desktop board).

Whenever I try to install NT 4.0 Workstation - I get the following
error:

*** STOP: 0x0000003E (0x00000080, 0x000000000, 0x000000000,
0x000000000)
P-5-0000 irql:1f SYSVER 0Xf0000565

I searched the Web, everything points to multiprocessor envioronment.
I switched off the Hyper Threading (Disabled Hyper Threading in the
BIOS). Still the same problem!

Any ideas? Can you please help me?

Thanks in advance
with best regards,
Ganesh

The cause may be the hyperthreading CPU. Of course,
Windows NT pre-dated hyperthreading and HT hardware
and there certainly would not be a HAL to support a
HT CPU but OK for true multi-processor motherboards.
Suggest installing Windows XP-SP1. Windows 2000-SP4
also exhibits, although not official, support for HT.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Windows XP and Windows 2000 works very well.
However, I need to install NT 4.0 due to some other constraint.
If Hyperthreading CPU is the problem - is there a workaround to make the
installation work?

Thanks and with best regards,
Ganesh

Hi Ganesh,

I have heard that there are problems using the later Intel chipset motherboards
(ie: I865 and I875) with NT 4.0. All the reports to date though have been
hearsay, with nobody able to provide a definate yes or no and more importantly WHY.

I am wondering whether you are having trouble with the install misdetecting your
motherboard type. Please check at the initial screen where your hardware is
identified that it is correctly choosing a x86 based single processor system.

There is a method to overide the automatic selection, but I can't remember what
it is. (I haven't actually done an install now for over 12 months) Perhaps
somebody could be so kind as to prod my failing memory :)

Hi Calvin,

Thanks a lot for the reply. When you say "method to overide the automatic
selection" - do you mean, the user option to presss F5 when the WinNT starts
to install? I did try this step and selected "Standard PC" - but, no luck;
its the same error.

So, looks like I have to buy a new Motherboard and Processor :((

with best regards,
Ganesh

Try disabling the ACPI, or APIC support in the BIOS, as
well as the HT support.

Hey Ganesh,

Thanks for the reminder - that was it - F5 !! :)

For some reason I kept thinking it was F6, I'm glad I didn't say anything, I'd
have looked like a prize idiot !

Hmmm.. It sounds like the rumours about i865/i875 chipset motherboards may be
true :-(

That being the case (I hope you aren't giving up all hope just yet) we may have
a problem as to the long-term survival of NT4 That would be a great pity.

Alas, its the same error. Arg*&$#
Can any one help?

with best regards,
Ganesh

Hi Ganesh,

What bad luck ! You picked about the ONLY 845 chipset motherboard that isn't
supported under NT4. Thanks for the link, most informative. I've actually gone
looking for this information at Intel previously, and had no luck. As usual,
it's a case of knowing the right question to ask to get a useful answer :)

Strange - for another friend with the same config. NT install.
Now, I dumped the image of his disc into mine - and NT works fine.

I dont know why - but, the problem solved.

Did his NT already have service pack updates to it before
you put it on your machine or before he installed it on
his own?

Hi Brady,

The Image I burnt into my harddisc already had the SP 6.
However, he did install NT 4.0 without the SP and had updated it later.

with kind regards,
Ganesh
