okay guys i know im behind, but i have a diamond monster fusion agp card(3dfx banshee) in a win98se box. I have installed all the right drivers and have two problems. I cannot get any better than 640x480 at 16bit color. when i try to go to 800x600 it knocks me down to 16 colors... now why is this?? secondly i go to run quake2 with the banshee 3dfx dll that they provide and when i use it and go to the opengl modes q2 crashes. anyone that knows these cards my eternal thanks :)

man, u are basically screwed by 3dfx.

diamond was bought by s3 and was shut down recently.

ur one and only choice is goto 3dfx and dwnload its driver.

I own a pci creative voodoo banshee

And never had the described problems myself. It could be that the card itsself is defective. Also what kind of mb do you have. I once tried an AGP banshee myself and couldent get it to work properly (this was a guillemot).
Have you tried the 3dfx reference drivers and the newest opengl setup?

Also there is a dutch site i used back then to get the newest drivers for my diamond sound card (mx300), www.hastec.nl they always have current drivers .. bare in mind thow this is a dutch site..

the take over didnt stop driver support... you can findd the newest drivers at :

http://www.diamondmm.com/default.asp?menu=support&submenu=Legacy_Graphics&item=drivers&product=Monster_Fusion

Dont know if they are really current thow.

anyway there are also support numbers there3 you can call..

hope this helps

The diamond card is actully a nice card outdated yes but still not bad, i have seen these problems before with this card and its creative counterpart (virtually the same card) you did not tell us what motherboard you were using or what driver revision either. most likely though it is an issue with your motherboards agp drivers. via boards are extremmly acceptable to this. get the newest 4 n 1 drivers if it is a via board. then remove all the diamond drivers, remove the card in safe mode install a standard pci graphices adapter then install the latest drivers from either S3 or 3dfx if all else fails try driverguide.com but I am sure diamond/s3/sonic blue still has drivers listed for your card. Remember though install the latest agp drivers first!

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!

Before you get into the deep stuff.. make sure you got the simple things covered. Is the correct monitor driver loading? Do you have a ton of monitors showing up in devmgr in safe mode? Either of these can keep you from selecting a resolution above 640x480. Also, incorrect video drivers or windows thinking its default driver with the newer date is better than the correct driver can cause the same difficulties.

Always, always look for the simple stuff first.

Pure opinion, you might want to look into a different card seriously. The banshee was pretty, well, lame. I think it marked the downturn of 3dfx from top notch to where it is today.

Voodoo banshee is not lame...

Compaared to cards now it is slow yes very true, but it served the budget gamer very well. I never had much problems with it and couldent affort a voodoo 2 back then. It was a great card also because it was compatible with all the games out there.
Its 2d performance is still good for all office applications and games. 3d performance is not even that bad considering i can polay unreal tournament on a celeron 400 with voodoo banshee without problems..

i rest my case..

My wife can't tell the difference between Unreal Tournament on her Cel-450/Banshee and my Cel-1030/GeForce2 GTS.

While she doesn't claim to be an afficionado or anything, she still has eyes, and isn't envious of my faster setup.
