Help with Win XP Pro reinstallation

Idecidede to reinstall my XP Pro on my old Gateway 6oo. Inatallation proceeds to cleaning up and freezes.
Any ideas or suggestions.

What happens on reboot ? If it froze on cleanup, OS is most likely installed.
Can you get into safe mode to run chkdsk /r on hard drive ?
May have bad sector on drive.

If none of above, reinstall, and format hard drive when prompted.

CHKDSK/r indicated a bad sector, so I copied my data and am formating and will do a fresh install of my XP Pro and my programs.
Thank you for the suggestions. I havent used XP in several years and I just did not remember how to even get started in solving my problem.
