Can someone tell me what this device does? Is it just an antenna that lets the projector become a WiFi device? Can I use any other device, it's pretty expensive.

I have an Epson 730HD and really need to figure out how to use it wirelessly because using it in the apartment we bought would be far far easier if we could access our home network shares wirelessly.
Thank you!

That device is an approved WIFI adapter for the printers listed on the website. It does NOT look like your 730HD printer is supported. Your printer does not appear to have any network support. Have you thought about getting a Roku or an Android media player and have that hooked to the projector ? You could cast to the media player and the media player would have network connectivity.

It does though. The manual and the menu reference wireless connectivity with this USB dongle. I just think the page isn't referencing my model because it's been out of production for a while. Hadn't occured to do it the way you're saying though.. Up until now, we've just connected it via a (very long) HDMI cable to our RPi with kodi and just controlled our Kodi with the projector as the display device. But that's too difficult in this new living room setup. So, I suppose I could get another Rpi I have, connect it to the network shares via WiFi, and hook THAT one up to the projector via a short HDMI cable and that would do it. Is that what you're thinking?

Yes, that is basically what I suggested.
