You'll need to use recovery tools...."

I have a 5 year old HP G62 laptop. Over a year ago I had to replace the hard drive and install an SSD. It has been fine the entire time. However, recently I have been constantly getting "restart device to check disk errors" for the past few months every now and then. I've been restarting it and it usually repairs on it's own. Last night I was watching youtube videos before I turned my laptop off. This morning I tried to sign in and it said "the user service profile service failed the long-on". I restarted many times until eventually it logged in. However, i got pop ups telling me there were some errors. I was unable to open any of my pdf files but google chrome, vlc player were working. I decided to reset my pc and it would go to 50% progress and fail. I tried again several more times but it just wasn't resetting. Then eventually I turned it on again and it just stayed blank and kept on rebooting on its own continuously without me touching anything. I then put in my usb which had the bootable acronis true image from which i had from when I installed my ssd over a year ago. I had a lot of back ups on my external hard drive. But the disk recovery kept failing and was telling me the backup is corrupt. I turned my laptop off and turned it back on and ever since then I've been getting the blue screen which says "Your PC needs to be repaired. A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error Code: 0x0000225 You'll need to use recovery tools (USB, disk)....and so on.

The problem is I upgraded my laptop to windows 10 for free when it got released I believe less than a year ago. I don't have any bootable usb device which holds any software. my laptop was originally windows 7. I don't have any recovery disks either. My question is: is it possible for me to use my dad's laptop to download an iso file of windows 10 and put it on a usb and then boot my laptop with it? Please let me know. Sorry I wrote so much just wanted to let you guys know every single detail. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the link. the problem is how do I open command prompt? When I turn it on it only goes as far as the blue screen telling me Your PC needs to be repaired. And no matter what I press it keeps showing me that. I can't go into advanced boot options or go into troubleshoot or anything. One thing I can do is press escape as soon as I turn it on and it takes me to a start up menu. It says the following: "F1 System Information, F2 System Diagnostics, F9 Boot Device Options, F10 BIOS Setup, F11 System Recovery"

I've tried all of them I can't find a way to access CMD through either of the choices.
So, what else can I do?

ok i will try that in a bit. Would i be able to use my usb for creating the media creation tool and then delete it from my usb after to clear up some space? and if i have this problem again I can download the iso file again from the same pc? Or should i just buy a new usb and keep it as my media creation tool only? Also, it says you need atleast 4gb of space. Should I buy a 4gb usb or 8gb? Because I'm assuming it's marketed as 4gb but it is always less? Thanks

you can reuse. the USB will be formatted by the media tool so anything on it should be moved 1st. But once you used it, you can reformat it. Use an 8gb flash drive (the iso is only 3.4gb but it helps to have more room)

Its actually smarter to redo an iso each time you need it as its going to be latest version then.

Ok. I was afraid you can only download an iso file once from each pc. I will try this and will let you know how it all goes. Thank you for all your help thus far!

Nope, as many as you need. USB can be used as much as you like. Since it was free for people to upgrade to and only available via download, they had to give people a way to make their own install discs in case of emergencies (like this) or to do clean installs.

Only thing stopping you putting it on every pc is that they all need valid licences for 7 or 8 or 10.

So another problem occured. I was downloading windows 10 from my dad's laptop which already has windows 10 on it for the past several months. Anyways, it downloaded onto my usb and then it was verifying my download. Through 40% in, it said "There was a problem running this tool. We're not sure what happened, but we're unable to run this tool on your PC. If you continue experiencing problems, reference the error code when contacting customer support. Error code 0x8007045D - 0xA0019."

So, what should I do now?

I was finally able to get the file on my usb and boot my laptop to the troubleshoot option and run Command Prompt. From the link you sent me, number 1, 2, and 4 did not work. I'm having trouble with number 3. I went as far as typing (diskpart, list disk, select disk 0, list partition). After typing list partition and pressing enter, 4 partitions show up and none of them are titled "partition 0" as that link you sent said is supposed to. This is what is shown after i type list partition

Partition ### Type Size Offset
Partition 1 Primary 199 MB 1024 KB
Partition 2 Primary 209 GB 200 MB
Partition 3 Primary 14 GB 209 GB
Partition 4 Primary 105 MB 223 GB

I don't know how to attach a picture so maybe you can tell me which partition to select and which to make active from what I wrote above?

Also, if nothing works, can I install windows (what you told me not to do)? I have everything backed up already so not worried about deleting everything.

Now everytime I restart my pc it automatically begins to diagnose my pc and attempts to repair it but it keeps failing. It says "Startup Repair couldn't repair your PC. Log file: E:\WINDOW\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt"

I'm so confused. It says all the partitions are healthy so I don't understand what the problem is. I don't know whether to give up and just a buy a new laptop...

sorry i stopped responding, i went to sleep. It was late here...

Yes, Install windows 10. If its all backed up, it will get rid of all of the mess.

Is it backed up to an external device or just another partition. If its backed up externally, do a custom install and delete all the partitions. Its all in the guide I linked below.

I think your hard drive isn't in NTFS, that is why you have no partition 0. - I didn't even think of that, sorry about that.

Follow this guide, it will help you with the install: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html

Thank you for all your help! I already installed Windows 10. I went straight to custom install and picked my hard drive as the location to install windows. The other options/partitions were Recovery, system, and HP_tools. None of them have anything in them now. Recovery has a full 14gb of free space. From the link you sent me, I have no idea what installing with or without UEFI means.

Since these other partitions have nothing inside them, is there a way to merge all that space with my ssd (c drive) ?

Hey sorry but I have another problem. Like I told you before, I've been recently getting "scan drive for errors" notifications for the past few months. And even though now that I have cleaned installed Windows 10 again, I just received another "scan drive for errors" notications with a red X beside it. I have no idea what the problem is because I have scanned the drive many times and no problem is ever found. But I feel like this notification is gonna keep showing up just like it used to before. I have an OCZ ARC 100 SSD which I installed I believe almost a year ago. It's health is at 97% according to the ARC SSD GURU software which monitors the ssd. I have scanned it several times but no problem has ever been found. Can you please tell what is up with this notification? I don't want to be forced again to download windows all over again.

Okay so now I clicked restart to check disk errors notification and it restarted and showed "checking and repairing dsk errors" for like 1 second and then restarted on its own again and then when I tried to log in it just said welcome for like 10 mins as those little balls kept circling around to show its loading. I forced restart and it again took a while to log in but this time it did and a pop up came up first thing and said the following:

"Loaction is not available
C:\\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\desktop is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disk is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or Internet, and then try again. If the location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted."

What does this all mean? Also I usually have my external hard drive plugged in at all times via usb if that is something you need to know. Please help me if you know what the problem is. I have no clue what to do. Thanks

My laptop looked as if it was having a seizure. The desktop kept on flashing uncontrollably and whatever i clicked it still wouldn't stop. Eventually after 10 mins it stopped but wifi wasnt working but then it started to after a few mins. It then turned off again on its own and the flashing began once again. I have no choice but to clean install windows 10 again. Although I want to install Windows 7 again I don't have the CD and I could not find and iso file of it because apparently they microsoft doing it for windows 7. I'm so confused and have no clue what is happening with my laptop. If you have an idea of the root of the problem please let me know.

Do you think it has anything to do with windows updates? Because it was fine for like a day but today after updates were installed, the "check disk for errors" started again. But I have no idea.

Now, I'm trying to clean install Windows 10 and it is not working. It installs everything and there are check marks as it goes through the steps but after it restarts on its own and says "your pc couldnt start properly. after multiple tries, the operating system on your PC failed to start, so it needs to be repaired" and then "your pc ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting more error info, and then we'll restart for you." There's also a big sad face on the screen. If you think there is absolutely no solution to this, then let me know if I need to buy myself a new laptop.

Also, something weird I noticed in my external hard drive. There seems to be a folder which I never created before called File History, inside it is a folder with my name, inside that is "my name-HP", inside that there are two folders called "data" and "configuration" inside configuration there are two XML documents titled config1 and config2. Do you have an idea what they are and how they got in my laptop? I don't know whether that has an effect on my laptop. You can be the judge of that.

Sorry for all that I wrote. I'm sure you must be sleeping. So since I can't even install the windows 10 on my laptop, im guessing theres nothing else I can do? Im assuming there must be something wrong with my SSD (even though it is only 1 year old). The laptop itself is over 5 years old. Let me know what your advice is. Thanks

I feel like I shouldn't sleep anymore... your laptop looks like it needs professional help to sort out the problems. That blue screen with the smilie face is a BSOD, you shouldn't really get them in the install process. Plus the drive shouldn't need to get repaired right after install. Ands your desktop shouldn't disappear at all. and all those restarts during the install process... something is wrong with the hardware config. It could be the bios or the actual SSD

The file history folder is set up by win 10 on any external drive it finds as a backup of sorts. I haven't got an external drive so not used it myself. I don't know when it was set up, is it a new profile or you old one?

you probably should have left windows alone after it started the scan, it was probably still doing it when you restarted it. That might be why it couldn't find the desktop as you may have caused that with the restart.

5 years isn't that old but its your choice. I would try to get this one fixed by a shop as they know more about this stuff than both of us. They might tell you to replace it. I cannot tell. They will be able to tell you whats wrong though.

No i forced restart when it was saying welcome and trying to log in for like 10mins. I didn't restart it when it was scanning the hard drive. It restarted on its own. I really hope its not the SSD. I was able to press F2 and go into scanning hard disk test and memory test and so forth and it passed all tests. The SSD Guru app says the ssd is 97% in terms of health status so i don't know. But yes, you're right. I'll try to get it repaired instead of buying a new laptop especially around this time when there aren't really any good deals on laptops.

No after the whole flashing thing was happening to my desktop I turned it off and then booted it via usb and installed windows 10. after it installed and all the check marks were there, it had to restart and that's when all the problems started. Also, the first problem was before the flashing thing was this following pop-up that I wrote above talking about how cc:\\windows\system32\desktop is not found. Do you know what that means? You think that had something to do with it?

it means it can't find your desktop folder... the folder that contains all the shortcuts that appear on your desktop. Its a sign your install today didn't achieve anything as putting windows on top of a already sick install isn't going to fix it. The flashing and then the desktop folder vanishing are connected somehow but at this stage, I don't know whats going on.

That flashing thing would have freaked me out too. Take it professionals, it could be more than just windows that is sick :)
