Hertz/FPS more energy?

I apologize for the stupid question but I couldn't find answers on Google.

Do these 2 things affect power consumption?

- Higher hertz on the monitor like for example 120 hertz
- Higher FPS in games

The only thing I could find on Google is that hertz does not affect power consumption, however it was only one site. But if FPS affects power consumption then it would mean that by using 120 hertz you would get a max of 120 FPS instead of 60 which passively affects it.

I hope someone knows, sorry if this is the wrong forum section!

Having the video card produce different amounts of FPS does affect power consumption and having a 120mhz monitor will only affect power consumption if you increase the FPS to the 120 max so you can keep power consumption to a lower amount by lowering the in game settings to a decent playable setting along with the monitors resolution.
Seems to me the refresh rate of the monitor being increased from 60Hz to 120Hz would increase the monitor's power consumption simply because it takes more work to do this, though we're not talking any substantial amount. Doubling the refresh rate wouldn't double power consumption. Mostly likely just an increase of 5% or less, so you might as well say there's no difference, even though technically there is 😛

Increasing the FPS output of your computer wouldn't increase the monitor's power consumption though. If your monitor has a refresh rate of 120Hz, it's going to refresh 120 times/second regardless of how many frame updates are sent to it. There's no difference here.

Solution
The power consumption of a monitor is dominated by the power consumption of its backlighting, you will find slight differences in the power consumption if it is running at 60Hz vs 120Hz but probably only single watt differences. With modern LCD screens we have dropped power consumption down to a few dozen watts, i picked up a pair of new 24" screens recently and they are rated at <32W when active. If i were to run it at 120Hz i might see the switching circuitry double its power consumption but the >20W of back lighting will remain the same so the overall power won't increase dramatically.


A GPU produces as many frames as it can as fast as it can unless you have V-sync on. If you have a 120Hz monitor or a 60Hz monitor won't matter to the GPU if V-sync is off, it will do its best to create as many frames as it can and will thus be running at full power for both screen refresh rates.
