The athlon optimized codes havent been fully worked out yet.
What you used are just beta done by programmers in their spare time. (one hour they claimed)
here is their response

While the SSE optimized code was done by professionals.

Memory bandwidth alone isnt going to make encoding run faster.
Encoding still uses a lot of intensive fpu calc.
Which is why SSe2 and Enchanced 3dnow helps out a lot.

Ive heard and seen programmers agree that it is optimization that counts and that both Enchanced 3dnow and SSe2 are quitwe comparable in features and speed.

Which is why Im taking up various c languages next year to undertsan what all this is about and how.

It even seems the code isnt fully optimized yet so

I know you will always keep an open mind to further developments.
Just dont be too hasty to judge somehting as final yet.

.... Tom said that AMD would be supplying an mPEG version optimized for Athlon later when they get time to make it better than the first effort.

.... So Tom knows it wasn't the final verdict.

.... In non-SIMD x87 mPEG, the Athlon @ 1.4Ghz outperformed the PIV 1.4Ghz.

Ho that is why, remember when intel did the optimazation in 1 night and they say they could make it even better 2? AMD already spend so long to make those optimazation and they are probably afraid to say that AMD is crapier than P4 in MPEG 4 optimazations so they have changed their way of saying that sentence to we can make it even better?
I rekon if intel only did it over 1 night, amd have to do it in the same time

sorry about my spelling :)

Dont expect the Athlon to beat the P4 on the P4 strong points. The P4 has some serious improvements when used properly. We would not expect the Athlon to beat the Hammer on its strong points either, it would endeed be a sad case if it did! For now everybody agrees that the Athlon is best buy anway, the interesting thing is how successfull Intel wil be in stepping up the P4, and I have a feeling they will succeed very well, because its designed for it. For new programs the P4 will beat the Athlon, because new programs probably will be optimized for P4 rather than Athlon/Hammer. Amd needs the Hammer to be good at running P4 code! Thats how the market has worked in the past, and I suspect will work for a while yet, wether we like it or not.

AMD doesn't WANT to do it in 2 weeks, unlike Intel with the P4, and also the P3 1.13GHz. They were being cheap and trying to make money, and it backfired on them. AMD isn't a stupid complany, thats why they're taking their time.

hey, it's ok to take your time on manufacturing hardware, but if takes more than one night to optimise a piece of code then you got serious problems.

Personaly I think AMD already has an optimised the flask code, but they are afraid to release it, due to the fact that it will only show how slow their chip is compared to the P4. AMD will loose major face sooner or later.

Intel has ten times the amount of resources that AMD has. This shows how awesome AMD is just to be able to even compete. Intel should be far ahead of any competition, but they are not because they are a bloated cow.

.... You got that right, intel has lost all headway in the past year.

.... Next PIV will be slower than even the current slugs.

.... 1997 Merced-iTanic never seems to launch.

If I remember rightly, the Athlon and EV bus cat handle upto 400Mhrz FSB. I would be interesting to see how the Athlon would compare with the PIV with that speed bus and (god forbid) RAMBUS memory. AMD have stated that they will not rule out RAMBUS if there is a market for it. Maybe the bug suprise from AMD is going to be the 400Mhrz FSB.

Why should AMD be afraid to lose the Flask competition? It would only show that the p4 has certain forces, but we have already seen that it has certain weaknesses as well...
Actually i don't care about which of the processors that can encode a DVD to MPEG 4 in 5 hours and which one that takes 7 hours! You would would just start the encoding when you go to bed, and the it would be finished when you wake up nevertheless. So what's the big deal? I would rather know, which one of them i can use in my next mother-board. Upgrading, overcloking and price/performance is way more important to me, than Flask encoding.
Am I the only one???

I agree and then there is offcourse the question of availiblity .. Intell did some paper releases already so ...

i wonder..

Hey man i dont know .. i just think i do !!

Maybe the P4 is faster at encoding.....It should be for the Arm and a leg you have to sell just to afford one.... 🙂
