Hello, I just did a fresh install of XP Home on my laptop, a Sony Vaio
PCG-V505EX. I instaled from a XP Home, OEM CD rather than the Sony restore
ones...too much junk gets installed that I'd end up removing. Anyway, when I
try to enable Hibernation from desktop/properties/screensaver/power
management I get an error saying "The process cannot access the file because
it is being used by another process" I looked for Hibfile.sys and its not on
my hd. Any ideas as to whats wrong and a possible fix? Btw, I've installed
all sps and updates.
Thanks, Edison

Hi,

Problem #1 is that you did not use the restore disk. It likely contains the
needed drivers for your laptop that properly support the hibernate function.
Without them, it may never function properly. Check the Sony site, see if
there are any downloadable ones for the system - if so use them.

Hibernate, like standby, is a finicky beast. If everything isn't just right
and properly supported, it doesn't work. Your system seems to work ok
otherwise, as it is using basic driver sets supplied by WindowsXP. The
problem is that these drivers often simply provide just basic functionality,
and not the full support needed for proper power management.

The filename is HIBERFIL.SYS and the file is in the C:\ folder.

I tried going to the Sony site and downloaded and installed all driver and
updtes. Still no hibernation and still the same msg when I try to enable it.
Can I reinstall the hibernation software from the Repair Console?
Thanks, Edison

Hi,

There is no "hibernation software" to install. It is already there, but the
current system configuration and supporting driver sets are not in place for
it to function. In addition to peripherals, there may also be motherboard
drivers that need to be installed. Basically, what I'm trying to politely
tell you is that the chances are good that you are not going to be able to
use this function without using the supplied version of the operating
system.

Hey there Dr. Edison,

I just had the same problem and error message with my TOSHIBA laptop, and I
can tell you that the fix had nothing to do with the drivers. I did the same
thing where I installed xp with an OEM disk to get away from all the junk
that the restore disk has on it.

Anyway, I had to uninstall Alcohol 120%, restart the computer, and then I
enabled hibernation without any problems. Then I reinstalled Alcohol 120%,
and everything worked fine.

If you don't have Alcohol 120% installed, then it may be some other software
installed that is causing the problem. Try uninstalling all your software,
then enabling hibernation, and then reinstalling the software. This should
work.

Cheers,
Stephen.

P.S. Keep installing from OEM CDs!! Do not be phased!!!

That was it! I uninstalled Alcohol 120, tried Hibernation and it works! I
then reinstalled Alcohol 120, updated it and Hibernation still works. I guess
the thing to do is enable Hibernation first, before installing other
software. Thanks, Stephen
