I have a Compaq Presario with Win XP.
The problem: when the screen goes blank after it's been on quite a while and
after the screen saver has been active (hibernation?), I can't get back on
any windows as the screen stays blank after I try shaking the mouse and
striking the keyboard. All I can do is reboot.
Any solution?

Don't know if this helps but I had the same problem. My keyboard and
mouse are USB. My keyboard has two ways of connecting, by PS2 or USB.
Conncting it by PS2 resolved the problem allowing the computer to come
out of standby/hibernation by pressing any key. I think there is a BIOS
setting that needs to be configured to allow it to come out of
hibernation if using a USB keyboard/mouse.

Again, this may not be your problem.

Is this a Compaq laptop? If yes, check the system manual for information
regarding standby. I had to press the spacebar to resume on my old Compaq
(don't have it anymore).

Hi Rod,

At a guess, I'd say some component, the driver for it, or some software that
is active on the system is not supporting the standby function correctly. If
this just started, then you need to examine what was recently installed or
update/upgraded on the system.. If it was always this way, then something
may need to be updated. Otherwise, you may need to disable this function.

how do I disable? I can't recall if it's always been this way.

Hi Rod,

It's disabled under Power Management in the Control Panel, simply set the
options to "never".
