Hie, I recently bought an i5 6600 to pair it with my GTX 970, hoping there would be no problem at all. I was wrong. When playing games such as AC Unity and NBA 2K16, my CPU usage goes up to 100% and hence GPU usage is never fully used. I have so much lag in games I'd expect to run decently. I have tried to fix this problem by running Avira and Malwarebytes to remove unwanted viruses, and repositioned my stock fan/heatsink. However, the CPU temps are fine, being 30c at idle and 60-70c (not sure if this is ok but no crashes at all) under heavy load.

Pleasee help, this was not what I expected at all 🙁

My pc specs are
i5 6600
8GB ram ddr3L
Asus B150M-A D3
GTX 970 4GB

Those temps are perfectly fine for a stock cooler. Don't worry about it you are good :) If you want to reach lower temps then you have to buy an aftermarket hydro cooler.

Thanks that reassures my pc is fine after all. But I still have no clue why in some games (Nba 2k16, and unity) my CPU usage reaches 100% and thus bottlenecks my GTX 970. I've watched benchmarks of people playing with similiar specs (i5 4690 + 970) and they always hace 99% gpu usage. Is there something I'm not seeing?

There is no chance of bottlenecking. If your FPS is locked at 60, that means v-sync is on. You may have v-sync on within the game settings.

In that case usage is low and that means you have way more GPU power than the game can use up to 60 FPS.

Yes and thanks, but I have vsync off in games like nba 2k16 and get only 60 - 70% gpu usage, whilst cpu bounces up to 100% Is there is virtually no explanation for this?

I got the same issue too now. Randomly started today and don't know how to solve it (started with Dying Light)

Yea i am having the same problems with my Rig as you. I have a i5 4670k 8gb ram and a Gtx 970 and in many new games my cpu reaches close to 100% usage at some points, which causes fps drops and stuttering. There is no way that my cpu is bottlenecking the card as i saw ppl playing on the same setup i have on yotube while having constant 60 fps in games with 99% gpu usage.

From what i understand the problems comes from the 900 series cards like 970/980 that only use a portion of their full power in new games (like 60-70%) which causes your cpu to take a hit as it starts to overpreform due to your card not caring about preforming as it should.

Here is a link to the official nvidia forum with ppl having the same problems we are experiencing :https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/781982/geforce-drivers/nvidia-geforce-gtx-900-series-feedback-gathering-low-gpu-load-and-other-issues-/164/

I personally tried a lot of things, like forcing preformance mode in nvidia panel in global settings, or making a clean gpu drive wipe and instaling them from a clean state. It did not change much. In games like witcher 3, arkham knight 60 fps mode, my 970 just sits at 60-70% usage and my cpu choking itself to 90-100% use.

I will just prob send my 970 to be replaced and hope that it's gonna fix it. As i see no other solution to the problem at hand

There is nothing wrong with your GPU's.
It is just that some games can use and will use more than 4 core/threads.You can hear many people say that there is no way i5 will bottleneck 970 980 or 980TI but actually it will.
Some of games like that are BF4,GTAV,NBA2k16(i donno rly why this game use so much CPU), AC:Unity and Syndicate,Star Wars Battlefront.
Overclocking will help but it will not remove the problem.Only hope we have for i5's is DX12 and i hope he will help and resolve CPU bottleneck in future games with slower CPU's.

Okay but then how is it that some ppl on yotube with the same cpu as me are playing witcher 3 at high and some ultra detail and are having 60 fps with minimal drops here and there and no stutters and i can't do the same. The original poster has a even newer one from the 6th gen and is having those problems. When i play games i always lock them with Vsync on, so it's not like i am trying to push my hardware to the limit.

So now i have to buy a i7 just to enjoy gaming in 1080p in 60 fps..... . I mean i wish intel would release cheaper cpus with more than 4 cores, but as far as i am informed i5 should be good for gaming as they are not a entry level cpu like i3.

I'm having this problem too - I have an i5 6600k and GTX 1080 Founders Edition with 16gb of DDR 4 ram. This problem is especially prevalent in Hitman. Looking at benchmarks, other users are not seeing 100% CPU usage which makes me think this is an issue and not simply the limits of the hardware.

I guess there is no anwser for this. I see ppl on youtube playing the same games as me on high settings having 99% Gpu usage and no framerate problems. The biggest offenders for me being The Witcher 3 and Arkham Knight. Even when i try to play Witcher 3 in 30 fps my cpu (4670k no oc) sit's at around 70% usage,(and thats not even in a city just the first open area) while my card (G1 970) is 35%.
But for example i bought the new Doom an it preforms superb. With everything on ultra and 1080p it never drops below 60 with V-sync on, and when i turned it off to check preformance i was getting well above 100 Fps in open heavy combat areas, got around 150 in samll ones.
My temperatures also stay in 65-70C under heavy load, so thats within Intels specification. So if something would be slowing down my overall cpu preformance i would also expereince it in Doom.
It just seems random for user to user.

And yes i did a full sweep of my pc with Malawarebytes/Spyhunter/Ms Security Es and i did not find any serious threath outside of some cookies it deletetd. It just blows my mind that i can't play some games (like Witcher 3) while other ppl with worse hardware than me run them just fine with 0 problems.

Hi I actually found a solution for this issue, Idk if it is a temporary solution or if it would work for others. And it kinda bugs me too. I was playing Quantum break and noticed a bit of a stutter, when I went to the task manager CPU load was always at 100%

So I had a feeling this was a software issue because I had a brand new i5 6600, and there is no way that i would accept a processor which i just bought recently to be a bottleneck.

So I downloaded Razer Cortex(from the official Razer site) - a system optimizer for video games developed by Razer to optimize videogames. I Installed it and then I used the boost feature which suspended all unnecessary processes and freed some ram.

I went to played the game and the CPU usage dropped by 15-20%. Then I wanted to make sure that it was Cortex that helped me, so since they had an option to revert the boost I clicked it. But CPU usage was still under 15-20%.

I don't know how it works but it helped me somehow. So now I am also using their tweak feature to optimize my processes so I that I can have a good gaming experience. I am going to test it out a bit more and then post about what's going on.

Hope this helped

hello, I also experience the same thing with unity, my build is:
Processor i5 6600
Motherboard ASUS H170 D3 Plus (DDR3)
RAM Corsair Value 8GB DDR3 (2x4GB)
GPU Galax Ex Extreme GTX 1070
Monitor 1080p 60Hz

Do you experience frame drops at certain area especially places with a bunch of NPC? I experience those. My frame would drop from 60+fps to 43-55fps in places with dense population of NPC. My settings are all maxed out except anti aliasing. I set it to MSAAx2 (lowering it to FXAA doesn't help much)
