Hey everyone,
I recently picked up a nice little laptop for me so I could game on the move, only one problem.
Every since I payed attention to my task manager, its been pinged at 100% since startup. Ive googled and tried solving everything from windows defender to going into the services.msc and making what needed to be manual and disabled and what not. I still have the problem, now im starting to think it could be the hard drive. This is the hard drive st1000lm024 hn-m101mbb not sure if its good or bad but im almost positive it should never be pinged at 100% with nothing running. If anyone could bring up any other solution, or could it maybe just be a bad hard drive and I should return it? Keep in mind its new.

Thanks, Nicholas

Hey there again, @Nick!

Well, it's definitely not a good thing, especially if it's affecting your performance. However, there are multiple reasons to why it might be spiking. It could even be the OS version itself. Either way, it's a good idea to keep an eye on it for awhile and also check its SMART status and health using its brand-specific diagnostic tool. You can check the shared hyperlink in my previous post for some ideas on the tools you could use.
However, always remember that the best way to prevent any potential data loss headaches is to always keep a backup of your files on several different storage drives/locations. "Backup" means that you have your data stored in at least two (2) locations. Moving data from your system...
Hey there, @Nicholas!

This sounds unfortunate! I'd strongly recommend checking the health and SMART status of your laptop's hard drive using its manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic utility. If there are any errors in the SMART attributes or failed tests, you should definitely consider contacting the vendor or the laptop's manufacturer for assistance. Since it's relatively new, you shouldn't tamper with it physically as it would void the warranty.
You mentioned that you have checked Task Manager, but I'd also suggest you go to the Resource monitor and make sure it's a software-related issue. If the problem doesn't go away, as a last resort, you could re-install Windows 10 from scratch and see if that would resolve it.

Let me know how the troubleshooting is going!

So it doesnt seem like anythings wrong with the hardware. After contacting ASUS multiple times, and reformating, it seems like i got what i couldve done fixed and the rest is windows. Atleast its not staying at 100 for hours anymore only about 10 mins. I dont care if its slow at first all im worried about is will there be any hard ware damage when its at 100? Im hoping for my laptop not to die within 2 years, and that microsoft will fix their os

"Backup" means that you have your data stored in at least two (2) locations. Moving data from your system drive to an external hard drive is not a backup, unless there is already a duplicate of the file on a different drive.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need further assistance!
