is the idle temperature for the MSI gtx 970 supposed to be 60 degrees idle? I know the fans are not spinning before reaching 65 degrees, but the fans on my old gtx 660 ti where hardly spinning and idling at 40 degrees, should I be worried?

Solution
Are you running multiple monitors, and also have you looked at the clock speed of the card when at the desktop (using GPU-Z or Afterburner for instance)?

I ask because I'm in a similar boat but my problem seems to be related to having a 3-monitor setup. At desktop my clock speed is 899 Mhz which is way above normal (and results in a similar 58C idle temp to yours). If I disable a monitor or use nVidia Inspector to force multi monitor power saving, it drops the clock to 135 Mhz and a much lower idle temp.

In my opinion, this is a huge "downside" of all Maxwell GPUs and their respectable VGA production companies. They're running them in passive mode up to 50-60°C, because they can "take it". In general You can override these settings in MSi proprietary SW, EVGA has Precision X, but otherwise I wouldn't worry, if it doesn't heat up Your system much.

And 60°C at idle is a little high indeed. Are You running multiple LCDs, or some GPGPU accelerated process?

No too sure what the problem is there Mate. However,I don't think your GPU is fried. The GPU would throttle if it got too hot.

I reckon it's a software problem. Check you don't have some other GPU controlling software (like EVGA precision X) running in the back ground.

I have the ROG swift and at 144hz I realized the 970s idle at 899 mhz and 42 degrees and the bottom card is 50 degrees. If it switch to 120hz or 60hz it idles at 135 mhz and 33 degrees

Do you have nvidia shadowplay activated?
I was having the same problem with my msi gtx 970. It was iddling at 0.987v and between 58-60ºC, as soon as I turned shadowplay off iddle was back to 0.825v and temps back to around 30ºC

My Idle stays 32-33 degree at normal is this ok? and when i played Crysis 3 for 10 minutes the highest temperature raised the afterburner caught was 71 degree and in avg i guess it was 68-69 degree . i m really worried . is this ok or not? coz summer hasnt come yet in my country and the hot is too much in summer in our country like right now the temperature 24-25 degree in summer its gets around 39-40 degree so i dont know if this is ok or not? :/

Are you running 144hz on your monitor? I got my MSI Golden Edition GPU yesterday and noticed it kept cool underload, but it was idling at 55C which very much concerned me. Turns out both my DisplayPort and DVI cables plugged from my pc into my monitor for 144hz made my PC think that i was running two monitors, causing my GPU to sit at 900mhz and "idle" at 55C (wasn't really idling).

After disabling the non-existent "second" monitor, my clock speed dropped to a nice 135mhz and the GPU is about 37C.

Hope this helps!

no my monitor refresh at 60Hz highest its Samsung B2230 Magic ECO LCD 21.5 inch 1080P monitor. my idle stays 29-33 degree at max 35 in idle not moer than that and in full load while playing AC unity the temp highest recorded got up was 71 degree but few days i m not getting temp more than 68 degree so i hope this things are totally normal for my MSI Gaming GTX 970 GPU

Yes, these temperatures are normal :)

I'm getting idle temps of 34 degrees and i even overclocked it in afterburner power limit to 110%, core clock +140, and mem clock +500 i also have 2 140mm corsair fans in the front of my s340 case which keeps pretty much my whole system in the 30's 29-32 on cpu core with 212 evo cooler, mobo from case cooling, gpu from stock cooler left on auto. and cpu is oc'ed as well i5-4690k @ 4ghz

Hello all, first time build so I may have some noob questions, I apologize in advance.

I came to this thread as I was experiencing the same high temps, but thanks to some new exhaust fans & Nvidia Inspector I have dropped it down to 43C. But to get it into the 30s I have a few questions.

Current Room temps = 21-24C

My current set up
i7 4790k OC to 4.4GHz w/H60 cooler
MSI GTX 970
CX750M PSU
Corsair 300R case

1x27in 1440p Monitor & 1x23in 1080p Monitor

My current fan set up is:
1x140mm & 1x120mm Front Intake fan (will be 2xSP140s on Tuesday) (75% power)
2xAF120 Exhaust fans at the top (Currently using 75% power)
SP120 pushing air though the H60 radiator into the case

My question to you is as follows:

Would upping my intake/exhaust fan speed to 100% be advisable or is this something I should avoid? (I'm not really concerned with noise as I have my headphones on 99% of the time when I'm gaming.

Or should I invest in intake fans for the side panel (300R supports 2x 120/140mm)? I assuming fans blowing directly on the GPU will do nothing but good, but may be a bit overkill, and having to disconnect them every time I want to open my case doesn't sound appealing. That being said, if its necessary, its necessary and I'll do it.

Thanks in advance gang.

The default fan profile for these cards are 0 rpm until the fan reaches 65 degrees celsius. Have you configured a custom fan profile?

No I have not set up any fan profile for the GPU. Just stock as stock can be.

yesterday My MSI GTX 970,after playing for half an hour the Assassins Creed Unity i checked my MSI afterburner then i saw my temperature rose highest upto 75 degrees 🙁 and average was 71-73 degree. should i be worried ? or is there any problem in my PC? i m using stock cooler as well

That temperature is normal, but if it reaches 80 degrees, the card will throttle down to avoid more heat, but 71-73 degrees is normal. :)

I had this High Idle Temp issue since 4 to 5 months. I search over internet everywhere cant found the solution. but then finally i bought gta 5 i love that game so much watching youtube videos of gta 5 ultra settings graphics looks so awesome. but when i do my gta5 graphics on ultra results loss of fps and shuttering occured. but then finally i rid this issue by my self and now i can play on ultra with full 60fps no shutterng fucking hell smooth you hav to do 2 things as mention below.
1. Open a command prompt. (Run a command prompt as Administrator in Windows vista/7/8)
Copy command line and Paste sc stop NvStreamSvc hit enter then copy paste 2nd line on 2nd task sc config NvStreamSvc start= disabled then hit enter close cmd
2. Go to task manager and stop this process. (Services and Controllerapp.exe32*)
close task manager. Now see your temp it will decrease and gpu utilization will be reduce from 97% to Early 1% to 15%
Suggestion: Keep ur Room Cool Always.
Hope it works for u all.

If you are still having problems with high idle temps, it could simply be the sensors on the motherboard. Many good suggestions here but one I have not seen yet.

Take your old video card (or buy a new one) and replace your new card with either of the two I suggested. Run one of your games and watch the temps. If they are proper for either of those two video cards then yes, your current video card is too hot at idle. However, if either of the cards show abnormally high temps then it's your motherboard sensors.

If you bought a new card to do this test simply return it within 15 days or keep it. Request an RMA for your current video card. When it is sent back to you plug it in again and see if the temps are normal. If they are you can sell it on eBay. Better to lose a little money than to by worried about using your computer all the time.

Hi! I had 60c on my strix 970 just doing anything at idle, I started the windows and then the VID Usage went up to 10% an then the temps just went to 50c in 5 minutes, without gaming.. anything really. I went to task manager and I looked for the process that uses that 10% of VID.. and it was the Nvidia Capture, I killed the process and then my 970 was back to the 30's degrees celsius. Hope I helped

i did have same problem with gigabyte gtx 970 g1.. it was 60 degrees Celsius "too hot for an idle CPU"
and my problem was "windows sidebar" so i disable it in msconfig startup.. and walllla back to normal..
sorry for my bad english 😀
