Hi, I'm about to upgrade my internet connection, and they are offering some sort of wireless access. I'ts not satellite, but is based on the WLL (Wireless Local Loop) technology, that will also be used (In Venezuela, anyways) for basic telephony. Anyway, they offer 256Kbps access (that is equal to the only ADSL provider that venezuela has yet) with some sort of anttena that plugs to the PC via a NIC. What do you know about this sort of Internet Access?

Never heard of it.
But then again, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Never heard of it neither. Is it popular where you live? Are there many customers getting/in line to get it? Have people been complimenting/putting it down? Those are some questions to answer for yourself which may help you in your decision.

well, truth be told, the service still hasn't rolled out just yet. on my ISP's info, they just say that is some sort of reciever that must be connected to the NIC ('cause if you want to share the connection, the charge DOUBLE, but with double access and up to 4 PCs, but I guess that's just a marketing gimmick to charge more for the services) and also there is the problem that the charge is a monthly fee of Bs.49.000 that,s about $70 bucks a month! wich is exactly what the othe company charges for the DSL connection, ot top of a fee by the same company that they charge for having the line in DSL mode, since the other ISP (CANTV.NET) is part of the only basic telephony company until last year, when the monopoly contract ended, and this year there should be some new companies. All in all, since I use too much internet, I need to know if the wireless connection really works.
Thanks

They offer wireless where I live. Looked into it as an alternative to cable or DSL. It was too expensive for me and relativly new technology. I would have had to buy the transciever/network card and antenna. The monthly fee was inline with DSL or cable though. You have to live within line of sight of one of the providers antenna.
As far as connection quality, I can only go by a friends experience. He claimed download speeds comparable with cable or a good DSL line. He is an online gamer and packet loss was a bit of a problem. Surfers don't generally have to worry about packet loss
If you have a choice between DSL and wireless choice, try DSL first (less initial cost).

Remeber!: There is no such thing as a bad beer. Some are just better than others.

it's new technology..I think Sprint has designed something similar to this.. I'd have to go back and look. It undoubtedly is going to have some bugs right now.. Even people with DSL and Cable don't live a troublefree superspeed broadband Nirvana..(of course it's close for some.. distant for others). If it's not offering more bandwidth at the same price, I would go with DSL for now..

DSL is in my opinion definitely better over cable.

Sounds very interesting. But be where that wireless internet is (right now) pretty damn slow. While the say that access is 256Kpbs it may be a lot slower. Make sure that it's a sure thing (in speed).
