Follow up on the machine I just put togeather.

AMD 3200+ 400fsb
GA-7N400 Pro2 (rev.2)
Kingston ram PC3200/400
Thermaltake butterfly 480W PSU
Thermaltake silent boost CPU fan & HS
2 fans in front, 1 in back, 1 in side panel 2 in PSU.

This CPU on the GA-7VT600 1394 was reporting 40C in the bios. On this board
it's reading 55C?? Same fan with Artic silver 5 on the HS. Seems kind of
hot. Yes I cleaned everything when installing & I'm satisfied the fan is on
correctly

Darned thing just jumped to 58C-59C. Mabey I'd better pull the heat sink &
re-seat.

Another question. Sandra lite tells me the CPU voltage is 1.7V. The chip is
1.65V. Could this cause overheating? Seems the BIOS only lets you raise the
voltage, not lower it.

So what is wrong with 55° C.? That is 30°C below the max.

Just look to insuring a good front to back air flow by moving cables etc.
Use round cables if can't get the flow you want. There are also fan arrays
that fit into one of your upper 5" bays. The air out the rear exhaust port
should be about 80°F.

Can't help ya on the voltage thing, I have an 8KNXP/P4 and it allows both lower and higher CPU voltages(I am currently undervolted by .1v).

I did learn something about front fans though, which I found on AMD's web site. It seems that they can actually cause HIGHER temps due to turbulence. When I had 2 fans in front my system was blowing hot air out of the side vent holes that are towards the front of my Chieftech case. I got rid of the two I had in front, cooled myself down a few degrees, air is now being drawn in on the sides, and my machine is MUCH quieter!

No doubt the 7N400 series Gigabytes reads higher than a lot of boards.
I had a 3200+ in an MSI KT600 board and it read in the low 50sC at max
load. With the same case/cooling and HSF in the Gigabyte, it was
getting up into the low 60s.

Get yourself a good heatsink and live with it. Mine at full load is 60c and
stable, Or you could use CPU cooling software if you cant find one e-mail
me.

Those readings are QUITE NORMAL for this MB/CPU combo.

Between my friend and I, we have SEVEN of these and they ALL have
readings that generally settle in the 60+C range.

Nothing to worry about. It's the 'way' GB measures the temp and BTW
85C is the max accoring to AMD so -25C/-45F LESS is QUITE acceptable.

It has now dropped down to the 49C-51C range. I know it takes a while for
the Artic silver to reach it's full potential so I'm quite happy now. Thanks
for the info. It msked me feel a lot better. PS: It's running very stable so
far.
