High Temperature with GIGABYTE Z97X-Gaming 3 and i7 4790k

I have just bought the mainboard Gigabyte Gaming 3, with i7 4790K, when I run the CPU Stress test the temperature reached up to 90 - 97 °C, idle temp around 25° but sometimes 47°, I read some topics about the problem of mainboard Gigabyte, however, I couldn't find out the good solution for this,

I'm returning this mainboard and change to the ASUS MAXIMUS VII RANGER, is there anyone using this mainboard with i7 4790K can give me some advise or temperature of them?

And as I dont OC so should I keep the stock cooler or i7 or buy a better cooler ?

There is no reason to get the asus maximus if your not overclocking or doing an sli setup thats what it is for even the gigabyte board you have is overkill for your purposes. 97c is WAYY to hot dont ever let it get that hot again. You need a cpu cooler a new motherboard wont help your cpu temps at all.

Thank you for your replies, I have no idea why my CPU gets that high temperature, I though it was a Mainboard problem, I returned that Gigabyte and looking for a good mainboard for i7 4790K, could you guys give me some mainboards which work well with this processor ?

I'm thinking between Asus and MSI.

no, it is often with the push pins not being fully engaged. there is a need for a high level of pressure between the heat sink and the chip to get good thermal contact. They are difficult to engage correctly.

I would just keep the board you have now. And the H60 is pretty good, i think you would be better off saving some money and just going with a cooler master hyper 212 evo air cooler if your not going to overclock.

The intel stock coolers are pretty bad and replaceing it is a good idea to ensure you cpu lasts. But i would think the stock cooler would keep you below 90c. So just make sure when you get the new cooler and board that you install everything correctly and use the right amount of thermal paste.

Yah that's a big case it should fit with no problem.

The hyper 212 evo will come with some thermal paste but its pretty low quality. I would recommend you get some Noctua NT-H1 or some Arctic MX-4 thermal paste.

Thank you for your reply, It was totally my mistake of buying i7 4790K and I dont do any overlocking, now as you suggested I will choose Asus H97 PLUS, but would it be in term of performance, the 4790K chip will work perfectly on the mobo with chipset H97 ? Thanks

Yes it will work fine. There will be no performance difference between h97 and z97 if you dont overclock.

Yes it will work fine. There will be no performance difference between h97 and z97 if you dont overclock.

Thanks Dunlop0078, I have ordered MX-4 thermal paste, unfortunately, it is just available at the stores in Paris, (I'm in Bordeaux) so i just have the option to choose Arctic Silver 5, a bit more expensive than, in your opinion, the MX 4 or Silver 5 is better or they are good equally ? I read some topics about them, they said the MX 4 is easier to spead over the CPU surface and also better in temp.

Arctic silver 5 is also very good but its a bit different than mx-4, it has silver in it so its conductive and you want to make sure none drips onto your motherboard or in the cpu socket. Arctic silver 5 should give you very similar temps to mx-4 but it has a "break in period" meaning the actic silver 5 needs a few months of use for it to set and give you the best temps.

I bought the Gigabyte UD5H-BK in January and just installed it this past weekend. I have a i7-4790K and the H80 and was seeing 44C idle temps in the BIOS. I tried reapplying the thermal paste and updated the BIOS to the latest. Now my idle temps are around 38C. System temp is around 27-30C. I was using this CPU cooler on my i5-2500K and had lower idle temps with a 4.2GHz OC.

I'm wondering if I need some washers. I didn't with the other CPU and motherboard though. I'm using NT-H1 paste now and only doing a minor OC of setting the turbo speed to 4.4GHz on all 4 cores instead of the default 4.2.

Do you still have the installation instructions for the H80? Does it say to use washers? If its doesn't then i wouldn't. It sounds like the cooler isn't installed quite right. Did you tighten the screws to the block in a cross formation being careful not to apply uneven pressure to the cpu? If you were sloppy about tightening the screws the block might not be flush on the cpu which can reduce cooling performance a lot.

Well idk then. I would think the H80 would do better than that. Have you ever changed the fluid? You could have stuff growing in your loop after two years of not changing the fluid. And i found the installation manual for the H80 below.
