Approximate Purchase Date: 1-3 weeks
Budget Range: $5,000-$6,500 Before Rebates and Shipping
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Video Editing (Adobe Premiere Pro/After Effects/Others); All Multimedia
Are you buying a monitor: No (Samsung U28D590 3840X2160)
Parts to Upgrade: New build; Reusing keyboard, mouse, monitor, Blu-ray Burner. Audio and Network on motherboard
Do you need to buy OS: Yes. (Win 10 Pro 64 bit)
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg
Location: Asheville, NC, USA
Parts Preferences: Intel CPU
Overclocking: Maybe
SLI or Crossfire: Maybe (but probable no)
Your Monitor Resolution: 3840X2160
Additional Comments: Low noise level is important.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: This may be my last serious build. I'm retired, and my primary video editing projects are my own. And there are a lot of them. Currently have an i7 930, 24GB RAM, GTX 760. Once I have a firmer price, I'll consider a customizer, but I like to build my own. Budget is flexible, and my budget above is based on pricing out a few alternatives. I don't want to spend money unnecessarily, so I have not ruled out considering an i7 build, for example. But I'd like some future-proofing, and I run a lot of different programs.

This is not a selected list, but a possible scenario subject to your comments and further review.

Intel Core i9-7940X Skylake $1,459.99
Gigabyte X299 Designare EX $425.88
CORSAIR Dominator Platinum 64GB (4 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 2666 $162.50
EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti SC Black Edition $789.99
SAMSUNG 860 EVO Series 2.5" 500GB SATA III $87.99
2x1TB $397.99
Fractal Design Define S Black Window Silent ATX Midtower Computer Case $94.33
EVGA SuperNOVA 850 P2 220-P2-0850-X1 $159.99
Noctua CPU Cooler NH-U12DX $69.99
Arctic Cooling Mx-2 Thermal Compound 4-grams $8.07
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit $149.99

Thanks, Stan

Honestly I think I might go with a Threadripper over that generation of i9. Especially with the new generation of Z390, X299 is a decent performer but the TR4-2990WX is a newer CPU with more cores and may be better suited for y our needs. This is what I think would be a better use of your budget:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

That has more cores, far more storage, and is less money than your proposed build. Also you do not need the thermal compound - the D15 has better thermal compound than that Arctic Silver. If you have a $5K budget you could even drop the 2990WX in there and get double the cores and still come in under $4500.

Sorry for the slow response. A lot to digest as I looked (not for the first time) at Threadripper. Too many choices to be ready for my "final" build. So, I'm looking at a lesser system as a next step.

I reviewed Puget Systems Premiere Pro etc reviews re AMD/i7/i9, and realized the i7 7820X holds up very well, and only $500 now. And comparing AMD also. I'm working on a build using PCPartPicker, and will post again soon.

For video editing and content creation right now the TR4-2990WX is the best CPU you can get for the money, but the 2950 isn't too far behind it, and it can pretty much match or beat what Intel offers for the same price or less money.

Just my take on G-unit's build :

Lucky, thanks for the response.

G-unit, very ambivalent. My heart is still with Intel, but I see the pluses re Threadripper. The Puget reviews suggest caution in how big the AMD advantages may be; and for the type file formats I am using, may not be any advantage. Some of that is limits re Premiere Pro/After Effects and whether multiprocessors are utilized in the current/recent versions.

My ambivalence translates into working on a cheaper build now and doing another build in the the next couple years.

Still working on a revised AMD as I look at more reviews and benchmarks. Here is a revised build with a 7820X.

Having trouble with the table. Link is:

Check the benchmarks here too. For programs like After Effects the TR4 CPUs match or even beat what Intel has to offer at the same price.
